It is important to study the Behaviour of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) under notch effects as it is widely used in industrial applications (Qi, 2018). However, there are only a few studies on the Behaviour of HDPE with defects, this work aims to study the deformation mechanisms under a tensile test experimentally performed on blank and notched specimens at constant speed and room temperature, and by developing our study by simulating HDPE using commercial software code.

This paper examines the effect of a broad range of crosshead speed (0.05 to 100 mm/min) and a small range of temperature (25 °C and 45 °C) on the failure behaviour of high density polyethylene (HDPE) specimens containing a) standard size blunt notch and b) standard size blunt notch plus small sharp crack - all tested in air. It was observed that the yield stress properties showed linear increase with the natural logarithm of strain rate. The stress intensity factors under blunt notch and sharp crack conditions also increased linearly with natural logarithm of the crosshead speed. The results indicate that in the practical temperature range of 25 °C and 45 °C under normal atmosphere and increasing strain rates, HDPE specimens with both blunt notches and sharp cracks possess superior fracture properties. SEM microstructure studies of fracture surfaces showed craze initiation mechanisms at lower strain rate, whilst at higher strain rates there is evidence of dimple patterns absorbing t...

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has remained the primary polymer used in hip, knee and shoulder replacements for over 50 years. Recent case studies have demonstrated that catastrophic fatigue fracture of the polymer can severely limit device lifetime and are often associated with stress concentration (notches) integrated into the design. This study evaluates the influence of notch geometry on the fatigue of three formulations of UHMWPE that are in use today. A linear-elastic fracture mechanics approach is adopted to evaluate crack propagation as a function of notch root radius, heat treatment and Vitamin E additions. Specifically, a modified stress-intensity factor that accounts for notch geometry was utilized to model the crack driving force. The degree of notch plasticity for each material/notch combination was further evaluated using finite element methods. Experimental evaluation of crack speed as a function of stress intensity was conducted under cyclic tensile...

Cellular plastics are light weight structures with many applications in civil, aeronautical, automotive and mechanical engineering. Properties of cellular materials depend on the properties of the solid material, on the shape and dimensions of the cellular structure and on the relative density of the cellular material. Most of cellular plastic materials are crushing in compression and have a brittle behavior in tension. The effect of notches represents an important issue in such materials, taking into account that for packing applications for example, notches/holes should be introduced in the cellular material. This paper investigates the effect of notches in compression for three different densities 100, 145 and 300 kg/m 3 polyurethane (PUR) foams. Experimental investigations were performed on rectangular blocks of 100x100x25 mm with 16, 28 and 40 mm central holes. The mechanism of damage was monitored with an IR camera FLIR A40M. Purpose of the numerical simulations was to calibrate a material model, based on compression test for un-notched specimens using the CRUSHABLE FOAM models implemented in ABAQUS SIMULIA. Then the material models were used to simulate the experimental tests on notched blocks. Good agreement was obtained for the load-displacement curves obtained experimentally and from simulation. Also the plastic deformation patterns observed experimentally by IR thermograpghy were obtained numerically using the CRUSHABLE FOAM material model.
