Schedule and Circulation

Schedule

The Bulletin is a quarterly newsletter which we aim to publish at the end of every:

  • March
  • June
  • September
  • December

It is published in both a Markdown format (.md) and a PDF format (.pdf).

PDF

We use the previous issues on the Programming Historian Canva account by duplicating an existing Bulletin and making the relevant changes. Boxes can be added or removed depending on space requirements and the amount of news we have in each category.

Lesson thumbnails should be replaced with the matching avatar, and the 'read here' logo should be linked to the lesson's DOI.

We name the PDF YYYY-MM-DD-bulletin-issue-XX.pdf, download it to PDF Standard without flattening it, and upload it to /assets/bulletin.

Markdown

We use the template found on the Wiki.

The bottom link to 'download the bulletin as a PDF' should always be linked to the relevant PDF uploaded to /assets/bulletin/.

We name the Markdown file YYYY-MM-DD-bulletin-issue-XX.md and upload it to /_posts.

Publication

We open an issue in Jekyll called Bulletin Issue XX - Month YYYY in which we make the following commits:

Circulation

Once the blog post is published, we aim to circulate each Bulletin around the following channels:

  • Twitter (link to blog post)
  • Mastodon (link to blog post)
  • Patreon (attach the .pdf and link to blog post)
  • LinkedIn (attach the .pdf and link to blog post)
  • Email to the project team (attach the .pdf and link to blog post)
  • Email to our IPPs (attach the .pdf and link to blog post)

For template announcement posts, see the Bulletin tab in the shared Google Sheets document named themed-posts (currently only accessible to our Publishing Manager, Publishing Assistant and Managing Editors).

One final touch is to mention it in our email signature, and linking to the tinyurl of the most recent issue:

  • Have you read the latest issue of our new quarterly [Bulletin // Boletín // Bulletin // Boletim](http:https://tinyurl.com/bulletin-issue-XX)?
