The movement of cypresses in Rovner’s work resonates with the view from library windows, and at the same time is an expression of social and political drama. The artist photographed the tall, slim trees in the Old City of Jerusalem, transformed the background into rocky terrain, and added brushstrokes and painted golden light. The cypresses define territorial divisions, traversed by a never-ending procession of nomads, migrants, refugees, or, at best, travelers in time and place.
