Troas

This paper aims to evaluate the disappearance of the city of Lamponia at Troad around second half of fourth century. Especially the subject was handled on the spot of history and city coins of the Hellenistic times. In the paper two viewpoints on the main subject are represented: First, the city of Lamponia, paid just 1000-1400 drakhmi to Athens in the Classical period was suppressed economically by the synoecism in the Troad. Second, it is known that there were individual attempts of autonomy or tyranny in the mid fourth century B.C. in the Troad. During these conflicts, iti is possible that the city of Lamponia probably was ruled over by Hermias, the tyrant of Assos.

Giriş: Troia ve yakın çevresi "arkeolojik" anlamda 1800"lü yılların ortasından itibaren araştırılmaktadır. Özellikle Schliemann"ın 1871"den sonra başlattığı büyük çaplı Troia kazılarına paralel olarak yakın çevrede "Troia Kültürünün Kökeni" amaçlı araştırmalar da yapılmıştır. Schliemann"ın Troia dışındaki çalışmalarının temel amacı, Hisarlık dışında, bölgede benzeri büyüklükte bir başka yerleşimin olup olmadığının saptanmasıdır. Ancak Troia öncesi kültürlerin araştırılmasına yönelik ilk kazı çalışması, Hisarlık Tepe (Troia)"de olduğu gibi, Frank Calvert"e aittir. Calvert 1856 ve 1863 yıllarında ailenin çiftlik arazisi içinde yer alan Hanaytepe"de (Thmyra Farm) kazılar yapmış ve buradaki prehistorik tabakaların varlığını saptamıştır. Calvert lokalizasyon amaçlı kazılarını 1863 ve 1865 yıllarındaki küçük çaplı Hisarlık Tepe (Troia)"de devam ettirmiştir. Calvert"in ilk gözlemleri yaşadığı döneme göre oldukça ileridir. Troas"daki prehistorik araştırmalarda 1870 yılından itibaren Schliemann"ın çalışmaları ön plana çıkar. Schliemann, Hisarlık Tepe" nin Troia olduğunu ispatlamak için bir yandan höyüğü büyük bir hırsla yıkarak yarmakta, öte yandan da bu buluntu yeriyle karşılaştırılabilecek başka bir buluntu yerinin olup olmadığını anlamak için bütün Troas"ı dolaşmaktadır. Bu kapsamda Schliemann pek çok buluntu yeri ve tümülüs kazısı gerçekleştirmiştir. Schliemann"ın kazdığı Troia I ve öncesi döneme ait buluntu yerleri arasında Hanaytepe, Beşik Sivri-Tepe ve Karaağaçtepe bulunmaktadır. Schliemann buralardan çıkan buluntuları Troia"nın en erken tabakalarıyla aynı döneme yerleştirmiştir. Schliemann sonrasında bölgede yapılan ilk prehistorik kazı, bu bölgeyi işgal eden Fransız ordusundaki görevli Robert Demangel tarafından 1921-23 yılları arasında gerçekleştirilmiştir.

A case is made in recent books by Lascelles and Crowe that Homer’s Trojan War setting was not at Schleimann’s Hisarlik site of King Priam’s Ilium, but at Pergamon. We review their case, the places frequented by Homer as possible clues, and the Iliad’s revision as compiled and promoted by Athens and followed by Alexander the Great and the Romans. We then focus on numismatic evidence in the alternative regions of Northwest Anatolia (NWA) and Central West Anatolia (CWA). NWA includes the regions known as Troas, North Mysia, Hellespontic Thrace with nearby islands, and Bithynia. CWA regions include South Mysia with nearby islands, Aeolis, Ionia, Lydia, and Phrygia, as well as Cilician expatriate lands. We find that NWA coins are rich in early Iliadic mythology, indicating that Ilium was a Trojan War setting. However, we also find indications that the war was more extensive than commonly envisioned. It was led in CWA by King Telephus, who spearheaded an East versus West world war whose campaigns ended at Ilium.

If H2a1 Mitochondrial DNA (MtDNA) bearers suddenly appeared in Eastern Europe in late 6th millennium BC and were omnipresent during Eurasian Copper and Bronze Ages, their modern dispersion's pattern seems to indicate they consciously overlapped Palaeolithic sites we have linked to the practice of early medicine. However they brought new characteristics from a prior southeastern Anatolian (Taurus Mountains) and Levantine (Galilea) ethnogenesis based on the convergence of Pastoralism for Milk (PM), co-evolution between gene and food practice implying the development of Lactase Persistence (LP), the Early Seeds Processing and specific associated behaviours such as selected body parts or perforated teeth as beads in burials. A Levantine thaumaturgical and matriarchal organization based on military force seemed to have synthesized all these influences and has diffused a culture whose elements are all reunited in the grave of Individual from Hilazon Tachtit Stage D (12000 cal BP, Natufian Culture). The lineage seemed to have followed the Fertile Crescent corridor that leads to Lesser Caucasus and reconstituted in Karabakh, close to the Kalavan-1 site, most of the Natufian cultural context. During Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB), while H2a1 MtDNA bearers expanded in Western Asia by Levant to become one of the most frequent sub-haplogroup of H, the corridor that promoted exchanges between Armenian Obsidian sites and the later Halaf site of Domuztepe, close to the modern Cilician H2a1 MtDNA hotspot, imposed advanced agricultural technics on the Araxes and Vorotan rivers. Thanks to a solid transgenerational transmission of medicinal practices that allowed overpassing the simultaneous development of new diseases like Yersinia Pestis, the innovative woman's lineage became a key element in the new population's admixture from Araxes – Vorotan-Hakari Rivers, future pillar of the Kura-Araxes Culture. While the agricultural Halaf influence extended towards the Caspian maritime plain, Bolgarçay River (Azerbaijan) and Gilan, (Iran), medicinal exchanges with central Asia triggered a new military network specialized in the trade of Boric acid and projected H2a1 MtDNA bearers in Inner Asia. West, the Transcaucasian expansion of H2a1 MtDNA bearers put an end to the Shulaveri-Shomu Tepe culture and their penetration between Don and Volga broadcasted thaumaturgy and advanced agricultural technics until Rhine following Gravettian sites we have demonstrated to be dedicated to medical practices. A last wave of H2a1 MtDNA coincides with the expansion of the Kura Araxes Culture in all Fertile Crescent and reached Atlantic during late 3 rd and early 2 nd millennia BC, changing the whole agricultural landscape of Western Europe until the Roman Empire. This paper demonstrate that Epi Palaeolithic elites were personally engaged in the survival and well-being of their groups, the Neolithic increasing demography forcing them to find solutions (*həll (n.) modern Azeri) making the 'Hellenism' the common base of the Indo-European culture born in Fertile Crescent.

The paper offers a revision of some problematic points concerning the historical geography of western Anatolia around 1400-1250 BC as reflected in Hittite texts. The first part (§§1-4) puts forward linguistic and historical arguments against the common association of Gar(a)giša/ Gargiya with Caria, arguing instead for a location in the central Troad and possible connection with Gergithes, also touching upon the question of composition and extent of the so-called ‘Assuwa coalition’. The second part (§§5-6) discusses the historical geography of the LBA Caria, revising some old and offering new identifications of toponyms. In particular, it is argued that Waliwanda cannot be equated with Alabanda (instead = Polybotos); that the toponymic cluster Attarima, Hu(wa)rsanassa, Suruda and Ama[...] is connected with the Carian Chersonesos; that Mudamudassa is possibly identical with Medmasos (rather than Mylasa) and Ura with Uranion. As a conclusion, the questions of the original extent of Arzawa and the chronology of the Hittite involvement in western Anatolia are addressed.

This article presents a small hoard group from the Troad which appeared on the London market in February 2016. The hoard group can be dated to the mid-350s when Memnon and Mentor of Rhodes were ruling the Troad on behalf of the Persian authorities. This hoard group therefore provides a much-needed fixed point in the chronology of Troad coinages which allows us to re-date a number of other 4th century silver coinages from the Troad to the 350s/340s, thus producing a new picture of the region’s minting activity in this period. The hoard group contains one example of a rare anepigraphic series depicting an archaic cult statue of Athena Ilias on the reverse. This and other numismatic depictions of this cult statue can now be placed in the context of Memnon and Mentor’s rule of the Troad and provide an important precedent for the Hellenistic and Imperial-era koinon of Athena Ilias as an expression of regional identity.

Die Quintilier sind zweifellos die berühmteste und am besten dokumentierte Familie aus Alexandria Troas. Insbesondere die letzten vier Generationen haben durch ihre Tätigkeit in der römischen Reichsverwaltung, ihre engen Verbindungen zu den Kaisern und Geistesgrößen ihrer Zeit, ihr literarisches Wirken sowie ihren ausgedehnten Villenbesitz mannigfaltige Spuren hinterlassen. Eine willkommene Bereicherung fand unser Quellenmaterial vor Kurzem durch drei neue Inschriften vom alexandrinischen Forum, die 2008 und 2016 von E. Schwertheim veröffentlicht wurden und Auskunft über zwei frühe, zuvor unbekannte Quintilier geben sowie einen nicht näher zu greifenden Κυιντίλ[ιος] der hohen Kaiserzeit nennen. +++ Damit sind inzwischen acht Familienmitglieder sicher bekannt: ein P. Quintilius Maximus und seine Tochter Quintilia Apphia in iulisch-claudischer Zeit, ein Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus und sein gleichnamiger Sohn in der Zeit von den Flaviern bis Hadrian sowie die beiden nachfolgenden und bekanntesten Generationen mit jeweils einem Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus und einem Sex. Quintilius Condianus in der Antoninenzeit. Hinzu kommt der Vater des ältesten Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus, von dem aber leider nur sein Vorname Sextus überliefert ist. +++ Die epigraphischen Neufunde nahm ich zum Anlass, die Familiengeschichte erneut aufzurollen und erstmals einen ausführlichen Gesamtüberblick in deutscher Sprache vorzulegen. Der bislang ungeklärten Frage nach der origo der Quintilier widmet sich der erste Abschnitt, der zwar keine eindeutige Antwort zu liefern vermag, aber zumindest drei mögliche Szenarien aufzeigt und diese hinsichtlich ihrer Plausibilität überprüft. Die nachfolgenden Ausführungen orientieren sich an der chronologischen Abfolge, wobei der fünfte Abschnitt auch eine Darstellung zum reichen Familienbesitz enthält. Die Schlussbemerkung richtet ihren Blick schließlich auf das Verhältnis zwischen den Quintiliern und ihrer langjährigen Heimatgemeinde Alexandria Troas.

Öz: Hellespontos (=Çanakkale Boğazı) ve çevresi Troas (=Biga Yarımadası), Khersonesos Thrakia (=Gelibolu Yarımadası), Mysia ve günümüz Tekirdağ'ın Marmara kıyılarındaki topraklarıyla Tenedos (Bozcaada), Imbros (=Gökçeada), Limnos ve Lesbos (=Midilli) adalarını içine alan geniş bir coğrafyadır. Deprem üreten Fay Hatları üzerinde yer alan bölge günümüzde olduğu gibi eskiçağda da sık sık depremlere maruz kalmıştır. Arkeolojik malzemeler bölgedeki en eski yerleşimlerden biri olan Troia'nın birçok kez depremler sonucu yıkıldığını gösterir. Makalede ele alınan depremlerin bazılarının merkez üssü Troas bölgesi, bazıların Propontis (=Marmara Denizi), bazılarının ise Mysia, Thrakia, Asia vb. gibi komşu bölgelerdir. Bölge dışında meydana gelen depremlere Troas'a etkileri oranında değinilmiştir. Bölgeyi etkileyen depremler çoğunlukla Propontis merkezli olmakla birlikte Kyzikos, Troia, Perinthos kentleri depremlerde en çok zarar gören yerleşimler olmuştur. Abstract: Hellespont and its environs includes Troas, Thracian Chersoneses, Mysia, modern Tekirdağ's Marmara coastal territories and the islands of Tenedos (=Bozcaada), Imbros (=Gökçeada), Limnos and Lesvos (=Midilli). The region lay near the main active Earthquake Fault Zones has been exposed to destructive earthquakes in ancient times as well as in the present day. Archaeological materials indicate that Troy, one of the oldest settlements in the region, has been destroyed many times by earthquakes. The epicenter of most of the earthquakes analyzed in the article is Troas but some of their epicenter is neighboring regions like Propontis, Mysia, Thrace and Asia Minor. The earthquakes occurred in the environmental regions will be analyzed if they cause damage in Troas. While the earthquakes principally centered the Propontis, the cities of Cyzicus, Troy and Perinthus are the most damaged settlements in the earthquakes.

The use of signs to create place is widely known and has been in use for millennia. Within this volume we focus on the concept of signs and the place they form as interrelated terms that cover a broad field of meanings, associations, and definitions. In doing so, through the papers in this volume we explore how different kinds of visual signs were positioned within the physical and morphological features of the landscape; how the landscape was chosen or modified to accommodate them; what value or information these signs provided for the place in which they were created; and how they have been socially, culturally, and spiritually appropriated over time.

The subject of this study is to constitute the preliminary results of the Çanakkale Central District surface survey conducted in 2016-2017. It has been determined that, especially with the settlements newly discovered in the surface survey, previously known Bronze and Iron Age settlements are mostly located around streams; at three different locations, namely the cost, lowlands around the coast, and inland hill-top. It is known that the geomorphological development of the district had negative effects on the locations of settlements. It has been determined within the scope of the surface survey that, with the coastal line changes of the Hellespont, a major part of settlements such as Işıldak Tepe Altı, Yarım Höyük and Saltık was destroyed; and settlements such as Arisbe, and Dardanos remained at inland locations as a result of streams lling the coast. This project has been developed upon the problem of whether there are settlements in the region that include contemporary layers with Troy. The evidence in relation to this subject has been provided with the discovery of previously unknown settlements providing contemporary materials with the Early Bronze, Middle Bronze and Iron Ages layers of Troy. Such settlements may include the discovery of pottery in the Köserelik contemporary with Troy I; the discovery of handmade Early Iron Age pottery on the coast, in Dalyan Höyük and Saltık, and in inland Zeytintarla, as well as Dalyan Höyük and Yarım Höyük, where we found Archaic Period pottery. Another important result is the discovery of new fortied settlements in the Archaic Period. Plan of the fortication walls were drafted with the coordinates obtained through Cors, and aerial photographs and videos taken with a drone. Accordingly, it has been understood that the fortications had some common traits such as having bastions in weak areas, and built with dry wall technique with roughly worked stones that follows the topography. The discovery of stone Tumuli, in the region during 2016 and 2017 seasons is an innovation regarding Troad Region burial traditions though its closest parallels were found in Thrace and the Balkans dated to Bronze and Iron Ages. Preliminary results obtained in the surface survey contributes to the Bronze and Iron Ages settlement archaeology in the Troad in terms of the addition of newly found settlements contemporary with Troy. Bu çalışmanın konusunu 2016-2017 yıllarında yürütülen Çanakkale Merkez İlçesi yüzey araştırmasının ilk sonuçları oluşturmaktadır. Özellikle yüzey araştırmasında yeni keşfedilen yerleşimlerle beraber, daha önceden bilinen Tunç ve Demir Çağı yerleşimlerinin çoğunlukla akarsuların yakınında; tam sahilde, sahile yakın ovada ve sahilden iç kesimde yüksek tepeler üzerinde olmak üzere üç farklı konumda kurulduğu belirlenmiştir. Bölgenin jeomorfolojik gelişiminin, yerleşimlerin konumları üzerinde olumsuz etkileri olduğu bilinmektedir. Yüzey araştırması kapsamında Çanakkale Boğazı kıyı çizgisi değişikliği ile Işıldak Tepe Altı, Yarım Höyük ve Saltık gibi yerleşimlerin büyük bir kısmının yok olduğu; akarsuların kıyıyı doldurması sonucu Arisbe ve Dardanos gibi yerleşimlerin günümüzde denizden içeride kaldığı belirlenmiştir. Bu proje, bölgede Troya ile çağdaş tabakaları içeren yerleşimlerin var olup olmadığı sorunsalı üzerine geliştirilmiştir. Bu konu ile ilgili kanıtlar, Troya'nın Erken Tunç, Geç Tunç ve Demir Çağı tabakaları ile çağdaş malzeme veren daha önce bilinmeyen yeni yerleşimlerin keş ile sağlanmıştır. Bunların arasında Köserelik Mevkii'nde Troya I çağdaşı seramiğin keş; sahilde Dalyan Höyüğü ve Saltık ile iç kesimde Zeytintarla'da el yapımı Erken Demir Çağı seramiğinin keş ve Arkaik Çağ seramikleri bulduğumuz sahile yakın Dalyan Höyüğü ile Yarım Höyük sayılabilir. Cors ile alınan koordinatlar, drone ile çekilen hava fotoğrafı ve videoların yardımıyla kale planları çıkartılmıştır. Diğer önemli bir sonuç ise Arkaik Dönem'e ait yeni kalelerin keşdir. Buna göre söz konusu kalelerin, sur mimarisi yapım teknikleri konusunda zayıf yerlerde bastiyon bulunması, topografyaya uydurularak moloz taştan inşa edilmesi gibi bazı ortak özelliklere sahip olduğu anlaşılmıştır. 2016 ve 2017 yılı çalışmalarında bölgede ilk kez tespit edilen ve en yakın benzerleri Tunç ve Demir Çağı'nda Trakya ve Balkanlar'da bulunan taş Tümülüslerin varlığı; Troas Bölgesi ölü gömme adetleri için bir yeniliktir. Yüzey araştırmasında elde edilen ilk sonuçlar, Troas Bölgesi Tunç ve Demir Çağı arkeolojisi yerleşim düzenine; Troya ile çağdaş yeni buluntu yerlerinin eklenmesi bakımından katkı sağlamıştır.

Coin finds of 1905 coins, and the works conducted on these coins during the works carried out through the 2010-2014 excavation seasons in the ancient city of Parion: one of the most important
cities of the Troas Region will be briefly introduced in this article. The coins by being divided among
groups, their distribution in regards of periods and mint marks will be presented and the some of the
preliminary results will be briefly presented. In this manner it has been aimed for the reader of this article to have a preliminary ideas regarding the coins discovered during the Parion Excavations.

Il tempio di Apollo Sminteo, situato nei pressi del villaggio di Gülpınar (nordovest della Turchia), costituisce uno dei più importanti monumenti dell'epoca ellenistica. L'epiteto «Sminteo» (signore dei topi) riferito ad Apollo appare già nell'Iliade dove la divinità è as-sociata alla città di Chryse situata nelle vicinanze della moderna Göztepe, non lontano dal sito del tempio di Apollo Sminteo. Tali associazioni omeriche trovano un riflesso nelle deco-razioni scultoree del tempio il cui fregio illustra alcune scene tratte dall'Iliade e da altri testi più tardi relativi al ciclo troiano. Gli episodi sono presentati in modo da costituire una nar-razione continua. Questo modo di raffigurare cicli mitici non sembra avere precedenti nelle decorazioni di templi. Oltre al fregio, il tempio presenta le cosiddette columnae caelatae con decorazioni in rilievo sia figurate che ornamentali. Tali decorazioni dovettero trovarsi in origine appena sotto i capitelli e non alla base delle colonne come nel caso più conosciuto del-l' Artemision di Efeso. Esse costituivano pertanto una singola unità semantica e visuale con il fregio. La sintesi tra forme architettoniche e scultoree costituisce una novità nella scultura sacra greca. Inoltre, le somiglianze stilistiche e iconografiche con le sculture della gigan-tomachia dell'altare di Pergamo sono un indizio di un coinvolgimento degli Attalidi nel fi-nanziamento della costruzione del tempio.

The paper aims to gather and put into perspectives studies published during the years 1990-1995 for coinages produced in Hellenistic Asia Minor. Beyond general topics such as the coins of Alexander the Great, Lysimachus and the Attalids (including the cistophori), main areas have been systematically investigated (Pontus, Paphlagonia and Bithynia, Mysia, Troad and Aeolis, Ionia, Caria [Karia], Phrygia, Lycia, Pamphylia, Pisidia and Lycaonia, Cilicia, Cappadocia, Armenia and Sophene. The bibliogtraphy amounts 196 entries.
