Abstract

428,272. Universal joints. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London, -(Cleveland Steel Products Corporation; 7306, Madison Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) Oct. 12, 1934, No. 29261. [Class 80 (ii)] Trunnion - bearing - sleeves 9 of a Hooke's joint are secured in apertures in yoke-arms 1 by a tongue-and-groove connection 30, 24, with various alternative means for preventing relative rotation. The tongues 30 may be formed directly on the sleeve 9 or, as shown, on a plate 27, press fitted to a serrated boss 26 on the base of the sleeve. On assembly, the tongues 30 are received in slots 25 in the annular grooved part 24 of the yoke-arm, and are then turned into the groove. The sleeve is prevented from rotation in this position by a bowed resilient plate 31, fitting the boss 26 and having tongues 32 engaging the slots 25, this plate being retained by a split-pin 34 or cap - screw. Alternative rotation - preventing means comprise a screw engaging gaps in a tongue 30 and in the grooved part 24, or a split-pin passing through an upturned flange on the plate 27. In a modification, a plate is welded to the flat base of the sleeve 9 and has two axially-spaced pairs of tongues, one pair of which is bent downwardly into the slots 25 to lock the sleeve. Rings 15 cage the bearing- rollers 12 and packings 18 in flanged rings 19 are also provided. Ball or plain bearings may be used. The cross 3 has a central lubricantreservoir with a pressure-relief valve and radial ducts 20 communicating with the trunnions. The sleeve-ends may be closed by separate plates.
