Abstract

1423168 Universal joints GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 10 April 1973 [3 June 1972] 26018/72 Heading F2U In a Hookes joint one or each fork 10 is made from a sheet metal blank and comprises a tubular hub 15 integral with triangular arms 16, with an apex pointing away from the hub, there being a radially inward trunnion 19 in each apex region. Each trunnion 19 may be either an integral cup-shaped depression in the sheet metal of the arm, or a separate part joined (e.g. welded) to the arm. The connecting element 13 may have four radially inward bearing openings for the trunnions and be made of metal (e.g. a die casting) or of a plastics (preferably self lubricating). Adjacent each trunnion 19 there may be a seal 24 located on a spigot 25 of the element 13. Each fork 10 may be either welded as at 27 to its shaft, or be split and clamped thereto by a band 28.
