Diana Murphy
Diana E. Murphy was a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1994 to the Eighth Circuit. Murphy was first nominated to the federal bench in 1979 by Jimmy Carter to serve with the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. She died on May 16, 2018.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Faribault, Minnesota, Murphy earned her B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974.[2]

Murphy was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit by President Bill Clinton on July 28, 1994, to a seat vacated by John Gibson. The American Bar Association rated Murphy Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[3] Hearings on Murphy's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on October 4, 1994, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on October 5, 1994. Murphy was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 7, 1994, and she received her commission on October 11, 1994. Murphy elected to take senior status on November 29, 2016.[2][4]
District of Minnesota
Murphy was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota by former President Jimmy Carter on November 30, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Murphy was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 20, 1980, and she received her commission the same day. Murphy served as chief judge of the court from 1992 to 1994. Murphy resigned from the district court on October 13, 1994, upon her elevation to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.[2] Murphy was succeeded in this position by Ann Montgomery.
