Berry Avant Edenfield was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1978, after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He served as chief judge from 1990 to 1997. Edenfield assumed senior status in 2006 and passed away at the age of 80 on May 9, 2015.[1]

Education

Born in Bulloch County, Georgia, Edenfield graduated from University of Georgia with his B.B.A. in 1956 and with his Bachelor of Laws, LL.B degree in 1958.[2]

Professional career

Edenfield served in the United States Army Georgia State National Guard from 1957 to 1963. Edenfield was a private practice attorney in the State of Georgia from 1958 to 1978 and was a Georgia State Senator from 1965 to 1966.[2]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Southern District of Georgia

Edenfield was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia by President Jimmy Carter on September 27, 1978, to a seat vacated by Alexander Lawrence. Edenfield was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 10, 1978, on a voice vote and received commission on October 11, 1978. Edenfield served as the chief judge of the Southern District of Georgia from 1990 to 1997, before assuming senior status on August 2, 2006.[2] Edenfield was succeeded in this position by James Randal Hall. On May 9, 2015, Edenfield passed away at the age of 80.[1]
