Virus amplification by direct contact ferrets may also lead to virus adaptation and emergence of variants with increased respiratory droplet transmission potential.
Droplet transmission may occur in crowded enclosed spaces, wherein the victim breathes in the suspended droplets that a sick person coughed or sneezed while not covering his or her nose and mouth.
There are three broad mechanisms by which organisms can be transmitted in healthcare settings:[4] contact, droplet transmission and airborne transmission.
They have longer incubation periods, making infected passengers potentially symptom free and unaware that they are infected at the time of travel, even though they can spread disease by droplet transmission. These droplets are created by infected persons when they cough, sneeze, or speak; and the droplets are propelled up to 3 feet and deposited on a susceptible host's eyes or mucous membranes.
These viruses [referring to Ebola and another similar hemorrhagic fever, Lassa] have long incubation periods, making infected passengers potentially symptom free and unaware that they are infected at the time of travel even though they can spread disease by droplet transmission.'
"It's not spread by droplet transmission. As long as nobody kissed the person on the plane, they're safe.''
In both events, there was a clear association between the temporal-spatial infection pattern between the index case and secondary cases that could not be explained by the known limitations of either contact or droplet transmission. Retrospective airflow analyses found the supply air rate (20.2[m.sup.3]/min, 713.4cfm) to be nearly four times the exhaust rate (5.2[m.sup.3]/min, 183.6cfm) in the index patient room, resulting in a strong outflow of contaminated air to the corridor and adjacent rooms.
The mode of transmission remains unknown but is most likely to be by droplet transmission although airborne transmission is also a possibility.
The research found that H7N9 possessed several characteristics of human influenza viruses, such as efficient binding to human-type receptors, efficient replication in mammalian cells and respiratory droplet transmission in ferrets.
