Abstract
1,046,633. Conveyers. RAPIDS-STANDARD CO. Inc. Sept. 25, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 37820/63. Heading B8A. As shown in Figs. 2 to 4 an accumulating conveyer comprises a number of rollers 14, each with a sprocket 15 at one end over a rail member 20 with an upper support surface 22 and a lower support surface 23 for a chain 24 with riders 42. When on the upper support surface 22 the chain 24 drivingly engages the sprockets 15; when on the lower support surface the chain 24 is out of driving contact with the sprockets 15. The chain 24 is guided from one support surface to the other by ramps 30, each of which is controlled by a sensing roller 39 by means of a lever 38 pivoted at 41 and connected to the ramp 30 by a rod 36. Both the ramp 30 and the upper support surface 22 have a gap large enough for the main body of the chain 24 to pass through, but small enough to support the chain by the riders 42. In Fig. 2 the chain (not shown) moves from right to left, thus driving the rollers clockwise to move articles (not shown) from left to right. The right-hand sensing roller 39 is shown depressed by an article, thus elevating the associated ramp 30 so that the chain 24 passes from the upper support surface 22 under the ramp 30 to the lower support surface 23, Fig. 5 (not shown), disengaging the drive to the rollers to the left of the ramp and halting any articles on that section of the conveyer 10. When the article has cleared the sensing roller 39 a spring 40 returns the ramp 30 to its lowered position so that the chain 24 is guided to the upper support surface 22 (Fig. 4) and the drive to the rollers 14 re-engaged. Figs. 7, 9 show an accumulating conveyer 60 wherein articles (not shown) are supported on wheels 63 and propelled by engagement with a narrow V-belt 24a having laterally projecting pins 64 arranged to carry the belt on an upper support surface 22 in driving engagement with the articles. Ramps 30 associated with pairs of sensing wheels 65 control the movement, of the belt 24a between the upper support surface 22 and a lower support surface 23 as described above.
