Abstract

1,251,982. Conveyer systems. LIBBYOWENS-FORD CO. 16 Aug., 1968, No. 57564/70. Divided out of 1,251,981. Heading B7L. [Also in Division C1] Apparatus for conveying sheets of glass or like material comprises (a) a carrier; (b) sheet supporting means associated with the carrier; (c) means supporting the carrier for movement along a predetermined generally horizontal path; (d) a plurality of chain belts located along the path of movement and spaced from one another therealong; (e) means for driving each of the chain belts; and (f) at least two members carried by the carrier adapted for magnetic engagement with the chain belts to move the carrier along the path, the distance between adjacent chain belts being less than the distance between the two members. Glass sheets S have their upper edge clamped between cork pads 321 on fixed elements 314 and pads 334 on movable elements 315 depending from a central bar 305 (Figs. 9 and 15) of sheet carrier 30. Element 315 is moved downwardly and towards element 314 by pins 341 on levers 326 engaging slots (340) in slide plate 336 and by pins 327 on bracket 323 engaging slots 328 in the levers 326. The pads 321, 334 are pressed into a gripping engagement with the sheet S by a spring 350 between telescopic cups 347, 348 and operated by a cam 353 on shaft 354. Sheet carrier 30 comprises an inverted U-shaped bar 302, 303 and 304, leg 304 carrying an actuator bar 390, with downwardly inclined end surfaces (392) and 393, which engages limit switches LS 176, 178 and 179 on the conveyer drive unit 10. The top 302 of the carrier 30 has brackets 311 supporting rollers 309 which ride on rail track 101 or 102 of the drive leg 303 carries two spaced connector bars 369 and 370 which engage magnetically with plates (174) extending outwardly from the links 172 of conveyor chains 115 or 116 of the unit 10. As shown, plate 174 is of metal and each bar 369, 370 consists of magnetized elements 373 between plates 371, 372 with protective top layer 374. Alternatively, the plate 174 may be magnetized and the bars 369, 370 of plain metal. A number of drives units e.g. 20, 10, 25 follow each other and the bars 369, 370 are so spaced that the carrier 30 passes smoothly from one unit to connection with the next unit. Limit switch 178 with normal stop movement of the carrier centrally of the unit 10 and limit switches 176 and 179 operate to forward or reverse the carrier 30 by small stages to central position if it stops too soon or travels too far forward. The chains 115 and 116 (Figs. 1 and 3) are operated by power sources 119 and 120 through gearing, the motors 126, 126 being joined through a coupler clutch device 134, the power sources 119 and 120 being mounted on a platform 111 and the chains 115 and 116 being mounted on platforms 110 and 112, all platforms being supported on the rails 101 and 102.
