This paper summarizes a study as to whether individual differences are significant factors that should affect the design of consumer decision support over the web. Our study postulates two orthogonal dimensions appear to be of relevance-Need for Cognition and Purchase Preference (ie, lifestyle vs. utilitarian), and that consumers can be sorted into one of 4 cells of a 2x2 matrix of these dimensions. The Need for Cognition is a well-researched dimension with its own instrument for measuring it, while we had to develop and validate an instrument for measuring the Purchase Preference. Applying these instruments to two study groups totaling 175 users forced us to reject the null hypothesis that individual differences are unimportant (90% confidence), and accept that 3 matrix groupings are distinct (two of them are clustered together in our sample). The study concludes with design implications that might best support the decision support needs of each of the categories of consumers in terms of features such as linear vs. non-linear processes, more vs. less analytical information, and when to deploy stylized photos, videos, and product placements.

We present a set of programs and a website designed to facilitate protein structure comparison and protein structure modeling efforts. Our protein structure analysis and comparison services use the LGA (localglobal alignment) program to search for regions of local similarity and to evaluate the level of structural similarity between compared protein structures. To facilitate the homology-based protein structure modeling process, our AL2TS service translates given sequence-structure alignment data into the standard Protein Data Bank (PDB) atom records (coordinates). For a given sequence of amino acids, the AS2TS (amino acid sequence to tertiary structure) system calculates (e.g. using PSI-BLAST PDB analysis) a list of the closest proteins from the PDB, and then a set of draft 3D models is automatically created. This study evaluated the quality factors of trade show websites as marketing communication tools. Four factors (system quality, information quality, service quality, and relationship quality) were assessed by measuring their impact on attendees' satisfaction with the trade show website. The relationship between website content items and attendees' satisfaction was also measured. The online survey was distributed to the attendees of the World Tea Expo via email in March 2006, and 369 responses were collected in total. Multiple regression was used to find out the important variables which affect overall satisfaction. The findings supported the evidence that the four factors were related to overall user satisfaction. The data further indicated that only four content items (general information, resource center, exhibitor list, and online registration) were important statistically. In this study, gender difference was also found to affect the satisfaction on website quality factors and content items. These findings can be the basis for future strategies in improving the satisfaction of trade show attendees.

Following the rapid development of the Internet, e-commerce websites are widely used today for various goals. An essential point in the prosperity of these websites is their level of usability. Accordingly, measuring this usability is indispensable for these websites to check whether they are moving in the right path. Thus, in this article, the usability scores of five well-known online food-ordering websites in Iran have been evaluated using a novel fuzzy Kano method with respect to design parameters. In addition to assessing usability scores, the design parameters of these websites have been classified and reviewed in a detailed manner in order to determine the design priorities of these websites as one of the main results of this study. Pulau Lance merupakan salah satu pulau yang memiliki potensi besar, baik dari sektor kelautan maupun sektor pariwisata. Letaknya yang strategis dan hasil laut yang berlimpah menjadi salah satu kelebihan pulau ini. Namun, potensi yang dimiliki oleh pulau Lance belum banyak diketahui sehingga petensi yang dimiliki tersebut belum bisa dirasakan secara langsung oleh masyarakat. Dibutuhkan keterlibatan teknologi informasi untuk memperkenalkan pulau Lance sehingga potensi yang ada bisa dimaksimalkan. Salah satu teknologi informasi yang bisa dimanfaatkan adalah website. Masyarakat pulau Lance bisa memanfaatkan website untuk dijadikan sebagai sarana promosi dan memperkenalkan produk maupun potensi yang mereka miliki. Untuk itu dibutuhkan pelatihan pembuatan webiste bagi masyarakat pulau Lance. Pelatihan ini ditujukan kepada masyarakat di Pulau Lance Batam terutama masyarakat yang berusia produktif. Pelatihan yang diberikan dengan cara penyampaikan materi secara langsung dan disertai dengan praktek sehingga memudahkan materi untuk bisa dipahami. Pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan keterampilan masyarakat dalam menggunakan teknologi informasi. Dengan keterampilan yang dimiliki, masyarakat dapat memaksimalkan potensi yang mereka miliki sehingga berimbas pada peningkatan pendapatan masyarakat.

We present a model of web-based learning for teaching Visual Programming in Delphi, by adopting in- dividual learning styles. A software system was developed for this purpose where two learning models (namely; 4MAT system and PBL system) are implemented. The goal of this research is to examine the inuence of the two selected models on students of different learning styles

User acceptance is a high priority for website design and implementation. Two significant, but largely separate, approaches to acceptability are: First, the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) has explored the measurement of technical features of a website to gauge its accessibility. Second, human judgments about acceptability are obtained from intended users or experts. The present work explores the important question of how best to combine these two methods. Experiment One required new users to explore automatic website evaluation systems. They found two of four systems difficult or impossible to use and system outputs difficult to understand. Experiment Two combines formal properties and user judgments, using an automatic system to predict user judgments from formal website properties. A simple system was able to predict user judgments within 91% accuracy. Clearly, user judgments about websites can be predicted reliably, a result of value to designers.

Designing well-structured websites to facilitate effective user navigation has long been a challenge, one of the reason is user behaviour is keep changing and web developer or designer not think according to user’s behaviour, so to improve user navigability by reorganizing website can be done by web transformation. This paper discusses how to improve a website without introducing substantial changes. In this paper we proposed a mathematical model to improve the user navigation on website. In addition, we define two evaluation metrics and use them to assess the performance of the improved website using the real data set. Evaluation results confirm that the user navigation on the improved structure is indeed greatly enhanced.

In this paper we present the initial results of a study aiming to assess whether and how much tourist destinations take advantage of the possibilities offered through a Web site. Central to our approach is the concept of quality, defined for our purposes as the ability of a Web site to satisfy the needs and objectives of all actors involved. We thus focused the research on the Web sites of regional-level tourist organisations in the Alps. In the first phase we gathered information on the mission of these entities and also on the needs of tourists. We used these data to define a model able to assess the quality of the Web sites of these organisations. The model is based on a theoretical framework whose application made it possible to identify an initial set of guidelines for the design of a quality Web site for a tourist destination.

One of the steps to evaluate quality is to define first quality requirements, for instance, by means of models. In order to specify quality models for Web 2.0 applications we propose an integrated approach which considers quality dimensions for contents and functionalities. In particular, we discuss how to model the different quality views reusing and extending the ISO 9126-1 quality models taking into account not only the software characteristics but also the own features of Web applications. To illustrate the added Content quality characteristic to quality models, excerpts of two evaluations are shown. The resulting models contribute towards a multidimensional integrated approach to evaluate Web applications of different eras–both Web 1.0 and 2.0 ones-, and lifecycle stages.

This paper attempts to determine the relationship between creativity and quality in requirements engineering, by examining the quality and classifications of requirements ideas generated in previous experiments that compared the effectiveness of brainstorming and EPMcreate for generating requirements ideas for Web-site applications.

With the increasing uptake of websites by universities, competition is no longer limited to physical campuses but has also shifted online, where each university seeks to create a high quality website. Online promotion and communication is even more important for African universities, which are spread on large territories, as it presents an opportunity for them to promote their existence and achievements, collaborate with other institutions, and deliver online education to students. Challenges facing Africa’s higher education institutions include: cultural differences, funding problems, language issues, and governance problems. In this paper we present the results of the evaluation of the website quality of three representative Kenyan universities. The study is based on an evaluation framework derived from a meta-model based on 7 dimensions. An in-depth evaluation was carried out using surveys, inspective analysis and automated tools. Results highlighted a number of critical issues and gave important suggestions for the improvement of the Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) website.

ABSTRACT Although scientific research on landslides in the Flemish Ardennes (710 km²; Belgium), has been conducted over the last decades, the Flemish Government only took account of slope failure as a soil degradation process after the occurrence of several damaging landslides in the beginning of the 21st century. Here we aim to present the successful collaboration between the Physical and Regional Geography Research Group (FRG; Dept. Earth and Environmental Sciences K.U.Leuven) and the Environment, Nature and Energy Department (LNE; Flemish Government) in landslide management. We will demonstrate how geomorphologists produced practical tools for landslide management which can be directly applied by LNE as well as other local and regional authorities and planners. Since 2004 three projects on landslide inventory mapping and susceptibility assessment in the Flemish Ardennes have been funded by LNE, and a fourth one on landslide susceptibility assessment in remaining hilly regions in Flanders west of Brussels recently started. Together with a steering committee composed of stakeholders, persons from LNE supervise the research carried out by geomorphologists experienced in landslide studies. For the establishment of the landslide inventory map of the Flemish Ardennes we combined the analysis of LIDAR-derived hillshade and contour line maps with detailed field controls. Additional information was collected through interviews with local authorities and inhabitants and from analysis of newspaper articles and technical reports. Then, a statistical model, logistic regression, was applied to produce a high quality classified landslide susceptibility map. The unique part of this collaboration is that all end products are online available at user-friendly websites designed by LNE. The scientific report containing (1) general information on landslides, (2) a description of the study area, (3) an explanation of the materials and methods used, (4) a presentation of the resulting landslide inventory map and landslide susceptibility map and (5) practical information on the application of both maps for landslide risk reduction through prevention and remediation is available at (https://www.lne.be/themas/bodem/grondverschuiving/grondverschuiving). Equally important, however, are the digital landslide inventory map and landslide susceptibility map which can be consulted at `The geographical database of Flanders' (https://dov.vlaanderen.be). This database enables persons to easily combine the landslide inventory and landslide susceptibility maps with topographical and lithological maps allowing them to check the susceptibility to landslides throughout the Flemish Ardennes. For each landslide on the landslide inventory map, there is a corresponding file containing specific information on this landslide. After a simple mouse click on a mapped landslide, the file belonging to this landslide pops up. Finally, guidelines for assessing the impact of planned interventions (e.g. construction of buildings, roads, ...) on landsliding can be consulted at (https://www.mervlaanderen.be/uploads/b332.pdf). Thus, we present here an example of how `Science meets policy'. The created susceptibility map is an important tool for improving land use planning, and in particular for zoning the susceptibility classes with very high, high and moderate landslide susceptibility where prevention measures are needed and human interference should be limited. The on-line availability of all project documentation opens perspectives for managing landslide-affected areas through both top-down and bottom-up initiatives.

Redesigning the website for a major academic library is never an easy task.  It is even more complicated when combined with the migration of a static HTML site into a content management system.  The UCSB Library launched its Drupal-powered website in August 2011.  Throughout our redesign project we concentrated on creating a user-focused site which not only provides information about the Library, but also serves as a gateway to research for users with a wide variety of information needs and research literacy.  We selected Drupal as our content management system.  In our presentation, we will explain the variety of Drupal modules and capabilities that we have used to create a user-focused site.  The discussion will include the technology stack behind the site, the build process, the management of content, and how we leveraged Drupal capabilities to create specific features for our site.  Topics discussed will include our database of electronic resources, enhanced site search, assortment of targeted news feeds, “smart” help section, feature boxes, and performance issues.  The UCSB Library Drupal site is located at https://www.library.ucsb.edu.

Purpose -The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has witnessed a resurgence in the management literature in recent years. This might be due to a renewed focus on corporate governance and ethical practices of companies the world over. This current study seeks to focus on how banks operating in Ghana communicate their CSR programmes and intentions via their corporate websites. Design/methodology/approach -A conceptual framework was adapted from the extant literature and was used as the basis of a content analysis of 16 banks in Ghana. This paper adopts a qualitative research approach drawing upon available information from the websites of these 16 banks. Findings -One of the banks that had won the most CSR awards at the Ghana banking awards had the poorest CSR communication content on its corporate website. It was also noted that banks that had never won a CSR award previously seemed to have a better organised structure in respect of their CSR activities on their websites. These findings clearly demonstrate the challenges that sometimes exist in transferring bricks-and-mortar organisational capabilities to online environments. Originality/value -Studies focussing on online CSR communications in emerging market contexts are almost non-existent and this study makes an important contribution in not only addressing this imbalance, but more importantly in improving bank marketing practices in Ghana.

The process of building consumer trust in e-Commerce is based on the presence of trust features or trust attributes in the websites. Trust attributes are usually presented to the consumer by some clues on the homepage. For example, the clue 'contact us' will be linked to the trust attribute 'company address'. Consumers may examine e-Commerce websites for the existence of trust attributes. However, to date, which trust attributes contribute to the website's trustworthiness and which trust attributes give more value to consumers has not been adequately explored. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is: (1) to look for relevant trust attributes that should be placed in e-Commerce websites and (2) to identify the importance ranking of trust attributes that contribute to the trustworthiness of e-Commerce website. Five e-Commerce trust models were used for deriving the trust attributes. An online survey that received 1230 respondents was carried out to investigate the importance ranking of important trust attributes. In the UK millions are now online and many are prepared to use the Internet to make and influence purchasing decisions. Businesses should, therefore, consider whether the Internet could provide them with a new marketing opportunity. Although increasing numbers of businesses now have a web site, there seems to be a quality problem that is leading to missed opportunities, particularly for smaller enterprises. This belief is backed up by an automated survey of 3802 predominantly small UK business sites, believed to be by far the largest of its kind to date. Analysis of the results reveals widespread problems in relation to search engines. Most Internet users find new sites through search engines, yet over half of sites checked were not registered in the largest one, Yahoo!, and could therefore be missing a sizeable percentage of potential customers. The underlying problem with business sites is the lack of maturity of the medium as evidenced by the focus on technological issues amongst designers and the inevitable lack of web-business experience of managers. Designers need to take seriously the usability of the site, its design and its ability to meet the business goals of the client. These issues are perhaps being taken up less than in the related discipline of software engineering, probably due to the relative ease of web site creation. Managers need to dictate the objectives of their site, but also, in the current climate, cannot rely even on professional web site design companies and must be capable of evaluating the quality of their site themselves. Finally, educators need to ensure that these issues are emphasised to the next generation of designers and managers in order that the full potential of the Internet for business can be realised.

Background Population based genetics studies are dependent on large numbers of individuals in the pursuit of small effect sizes. Recruiting and consenting a large number of participants is both costly and time consuming. We explored whether an online consent process for largescale genetics studies is acceptable for prospective participants using an example online genetics study. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with 42 members of the public stratified by age group, gender and newspaper readership (a measure of social status). Respondents were asked to use a website designed to recruit for a large-scale genetic study. After using the website a semi-structured interview was conducted to explore opinions and any issues they would have. Responses were analysed using thematic content analysis.

Many factors contribute to the design of a successful E-Commerce website. This paper discusses the importance of integrating fundamental usability and design elements, such as Gestalt principles, Fitts' Law, heuristics and affordances with newer constructs, such as social presence, social networking, trust, and both online and offline communication. A case study is presented which compares Heuristic Evaluation (HE) with usability testing (user experience test and eye tracking). Both methods were used to evaluate the impact of usability and social and trust elements on four e-commerce websites. Eye tracking was also used to assess the impact of social presence in one ecommerce website. The results reveal the importance of these elements for E-Commerce website design.

This study evaluated 967 U.S. CVB websites using a modified Balanced Scorecard (mBSC) approach which assesses website performance with respect to overall technical functionality, customer friendliness and usability, effectiveness of marketing the destination, and information content. Spatial maps were constructed for these four dimensions and overall CVB website performance using ArcMap v.9.2 GIS software. A structural pattern of CVB website performance was obtained using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). It was concluded that CVB websites primarily need improvement in marketing the destination product. The analysis revealed significant differences in website performance between members and non-members of Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) as well as regional differences. Study implications for destination marketing organizations and CVB website designers are discussed.

This paper describes the design, development and evaluation of a website designed to ameliorate many of the problems encountered by beginning teachers. The site allows new teachers, and preservice teachers on school practice, to communicate with each other through a discussion board, and provides access to a range of resources including lesson plans, videos of exemplary teaching, annotated lists of useful websites and frequently asked questions. This paper presents the analysis of the evolution of public websites in the Republic of Bolivia. It shows the changes observed in the design and implementation of 34 private and government websites, how these changes have taken place and how design and usability factors where influenced when implementing this changes. The study puts in evidence the changes in website designing, from simple low-structured content to complex structured content. The article shows also the absence of elicited good practice guides for websites designing and development in Bolivia, although it reports the improvement in Bolivian web design and tries to identify the leading factors of these results. Despite of the relative low developed Internet capacity in Bolivia, the technical level of web developing is near to the observed in more developed countries, but usually without taking care of accessibility and usability issues.

In recent years the number of health related websites has increased dramatically and so have concerns regarding the quality of online information. The sheer volume of sites and the variety of information available have left health consumers potentially with greater choice but it is not clear whether these online changes are reflected in user behaviour. This study addresses whether users are becoming more proficient in searching for credible, high quality information and whether they are more demanding of the type of information being sought and less ready to trust online health advice. This paper describes changes in the use of the Internet for health advice over a five-year period. It compares findings from two large-scale online questionnaire studies undertaken in 2000 and 2005. Key changes and similarities in usage and trust practices are noted. The rise in unregulated sites is discussed in terms of patients ''acting as scientists'' using websites to test out theories regarding their health. The increasing importance of design issues is also highlighted and implications for website designers and content providers are presented.

Essential to an audience driven website design philosophy is the organization of information and functionality according to the requirements of the different audience classes. However, at design time, it is often difficult to correctly assess the different needs and requirements of the different prospective users of a website. This may result in a non-optimal navigation structure, which will decrease the usability of the website. In this paper, we describe how to correct, at run-time and automatically, possible flaws in the design resulting from incomplete requirement assessment, using adaptive behavior. By observing the browsing behavior of the users, the requirements for the different users are validated and the website is adapted according to adaptation specifications made by the designer. These specifications express when and how the website needs to be adapted and are expressed using an Adaptation Specification Language. The work is presented in the context of an audience driven design method but we also elaborate shortly on the applicability of the technique in general.

Today, success in the international marketplace often requires that technical documents be translated into
multiple languages. Translation, however, can be a time-consuming and costly process, especially if a company anticipates that a product will be frequently updated
or revised. Approaches that make the translation process quicker and less resource intensive can cut production costs and reduce the time it takes to introduce a product
into a particular overseas market. A systems-theory perspective can enhance the translation process by reconfiguring the ways in which technical writers and translators exchange information.

Though innovation is a popular theme of LIS literature, its specific meaning for libraries remains obscure. Clarifying the implicit definition of innovation in librarianship can facilitate a more meaningful use of the term. To do so, we employ a ground-up exploration of innovation through the white literature in conjunction with a detailed survey of website features, of 160 libraries across the United States and Canada.

The paper discusses how research investigating reading strategies can inform web usability design for children by identifying visual cues or 'signposts' that facilitate reading and subsequent evaluation of websites. Using data obtained from a broader study of information-seeking behavior of thirdgrade students conducted in Montreal, Quebec, Canada the paper reports on the students' use of visual cues when reading and evaluating websites in their search for relevant information.
