The use of the compensation heat-pulse velocity (CHPV) technique to estimate sap flow in olive trees as a means of irrigation scheduling can be a difficult task because of the naturally heterogeneity of hydraulic functioning of sapwood area in this species. As a result, the monitoring of an unreasonably large number of both trees and CHPV gauges per tree is needed for accurate estimation of orchard transpiration. The approach used in this paper restricts the monitoring of a large number of both trees and gauges to a very short time (a day) and allows the long term estimation of transpiration of several olive trees by the continuous monitoring of a sole CHPV gauge installed in a single tree. In an experimental olive orchard in southern Italy, we monitored six CHPV gauges in three well irrigated trees (treatment T100) and six CHPV gauges in three rain-fed trees (treatment T0) at half hour intervals for 60 days during summer 1999. For each i th gauge at each day, we linearly regressed the sap flow (Q i , l h (1 ) against the mean sap flow of the all other n(/1 gauges of the same treatment (Qm i ). The regression parameters were used to obtain an estimation of Qm i (EQm i ) throughout the trial using the data of any single i th gauge. In order to test the prediction power of the model of i th gauge, the estimated mean sap flow (EQm i ) values were regressed day by day against the actually measured Qm i . The same procedure was also applied at the time scale of a day, that is to the daily cumulative value of Q i and Qm i . In all cases, we obtained high statistical significance of the models applied to data as confirmed by the high adjusted R 2 estimates. Our analyses show the feasibility of estimating the transpiration rate of many trees by monitoring sap flow in a single tree by the use of a sole CHPV gauge. The results of this work indicate that CHPV can be a useful and powerful method for irrigation scheduling for olive and other tree species. #

In a search for aspartic proteinase inhibitors (APIs) in kiwifruit seeds, we observed pepsin inhibitory activity (PIA) in an abundant globulin fraction extracted in high salt buffer with a Mr of ∼148 kDa by gel-filtration. On a SDS-polyacrylamide gel, a major protein band of 54 kDa was observed under non-reducing conditions. This band was largely replaced by two subunits of Mr 33.5 and 20 kDa under reducing conditions. N-terminal sequencing of the smaller subunit, which had associated PIA, revealed a β-subunit of the 11S globulin-like protein (11S-GLP), legumin. After trypsin, chymotrypsin or papain digestion, the α-subunit of the kiwifruit legumin (11S-GLP) was degraded to varying degrees but there was no effect on the β-subunit, or on the PIA. This 11S-GLP also appeared to inhibit bovine spleen cathepsin D, Candida albicans secreted aspartic proteinases (SAPs) 1, 2 and 4, the plant fungus Glomerella cingulata SAP as well as apple seed aspartic proteinase, but to a much lesser extent kiwifruit seed aspartic proteinase. Through kinetic analysis of pepsin inhibition, the 11S-GLP and the purified β-subunit were found to fit a Michaelis–Menten model for competitive inhibition rather than a tight-binding model characteristic for typical proteinase inhibitors. Extrapolated complete inhibition was only obtained at an 11S-GLP concentration ∼900 times that of the pepsin. Further investigation revealed that the 11S-GLP and the β-subunit acted as weak alternative substrates for pepsin. As the 11S-GLP or the β-subunit were degraded, the PIA activity declined in parallel. We discuss these results in terms of the substrate recognition site of pepsin compared with other proteinases.

This is a case study that Qualex Asia did using some sports betting website data. To highlight the application of QlikView and SAP’s InfiniteInsights with a real source of data, Qualex Asia has done an analysis using transactional information from a boutique global sports book predominantly accepting wagers via the internet. The majority of their business is on soccer and American team sports. The raw data set contains approximately four (4) years of single wagers (i.e. no multi/accumulator bets) comprising some 2.2M unique transactions across almost 300K unique events and 37.5K unique customers. The total turnover is $4.2B (AUD).
It is clearly evident that a significant reduction in data has taken place, allowing the sports book to utilise the much more succinct representation of their clientele to make strategic decisions across different areas of the business. The results of this analysis would be beneficial to the odds makers, risk managers, marketing department and also senior management.

In recent years, the Cohesion-Tension (C-T) theory of sap ascent in plants has come under question because of work published by Professor Ulrich Zimmermann and colleagues at the University of Wurzburg, Germany. The purpose of this review is to (1) state the essential and testable elements of the C-T theory, (2) summarize the negative evidence for the C-T theory, and (3) review critically the positive evidence for the C-T theory and the evidence that the Scholander-Hammel pressure bomb measures xylem pressure potential (P x) correctly, because much of the evidence for the C-T theory depends on pressure bomb data. Much of the current evidence negates the conclusions drawn by Zimmermann from studies using the xylem pressure probe (XPP), but it is not yet clear in every instance why the XPP results disagree with those of other methods for estimating xylem pressure. There is no reason to reject the XPP as a useful new tool for studying xylem tensions in the range of 0 to-0.6 MPa. Additional research is needed to test the C-T theory with both the XPP and traditional methods.

This review addresses the use of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) as affinity separation methods to characterise drugs or potential drugs-bio-polymer interactions. Targets for the development of new drugs such as enzymes (IMERs), receptors, and membrane proteins were immobilized on solid supports. After the insertion in the HPLC system, these immobilized bio-polymers were used for the determination of binding constants of specific ligands, substrates and inhibitors of pharmaceutical interest, by frontal analyses and zonal elution methods. The most used bio-polymer immobilization techniques and methods for assessing the amount of active immobilized protein are reported. Examples of increased stability of immobilized enzymes with reduced amount of used protein were shown and the advantages in terms of recovery for reuse, reproducibility and on-line high-throughput screening for potential ligands are evidenced. Dealing with the acquisition of relevant pharmacokinetic data, examples concerning human serum albumin binding studies are reviewed. In particular, papers are reported in which the serum carrier has been studied to monitor the enantioselective binding of chiral drugs and the mutual interaction between co-administered drugs by CE and HPLC. Finally CE, as merging techniques with very promising and interesting application of microscale analysis of drugs' binding parameters to immobilized bio-polymers is examined.

Background: Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) accounts for 18% of peripheral T-cell lymphomas worldwide. Skin involvement occurs in up to 50% of patients but poses a diagnostic dilemma because of the limited number of reported cases and subsequent lack of established diagnostic criteria.

This research examined the full range of tasks and activities that design engineers perform, how their working time is distributed among these, and how these issues influence their satisfaction with their work. Seventy-eight design engineers each carried a personal digital assistant (PDA) for twenty working days. Once every hour, they entered data into their PDAs concerning their current work tasks and satisfaction levels, using a work sampling approach. Work tasks were explored from multiple perspectives, yielding highly extensive and detailed results. A key finding was that design engineers' work involves considerable technical engineering work (62.92% of time) and socially collaborative work (40.37% of time). The results were discussed in terms of their implications for academic theory and organizational practice.

SAP HANA (High-performance Analytic Appliance) is an in-memory database and the main idea is provide centralized data in the main memory. It is designed to work with transactional and analytical processing and one of the first solution based on this platform is SAP Simple Finance, a redesign of Financial and Controlling modules and, after that, the SAP S/4HANA, a new set of enterprise solutions, that are the most chosen recent technologies in order to do this research through the participation in online courses, documentation and articles in specific sites and it uses the qualitative method applied in a single case study, even the dificulties to realize the interviews, the analysis was done based on the characteristics of the platform as an in-memory database, its advantages about transactional and analytical processing, possibilities of implementaton and security, and about SAP Simple Finance, what differs it from FI and CO traditional modules, the data consistence, real-time analysis and its continuity in the Business Suite S/4HANA, as well as its adherence by the market, besides the SAP’s strategy and where it wants to get, the Business Suite S/4HANA roadmap and, finally, an advice of a specialized consultancy about its adoption.
