Abstract
In a method of forming an amorphous phosphate coating on a metallic surface, the surface is treated with an aqueous composition of an aliphatic mono-ester of phosphoric acid having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, the composition having a pH between 3 and 5,5 and containing ions of a metal which forms with the ester, a salt compatible with the composition i.e. a salt which is either soluble or forms a colloid in the composition. The preferred esters are the lauryl and oleyl esters although mixtures of esters and mixed esters may also be used. Metal ions which may be used include those of zinc, aluminium, cadmium, copper, nickel, iron and the alkali metals, including ammonium. An amine which reacts with part of the phosphoric acid ester to form an amine salt compatible with the composition, i.e. ammonia, monoamines, diamines, tertiary amines and cyclic and heterocyclic amines, may be incorporated in the composition, as also may be added an oxidising agent to act as an accelerator e.g. a nitride, nitrate, peroxide, chlorate, bromate, sulphite or a nitro-organic compound such as meta-nitrobenzine sulphonate or picric acid. It is said that these coatings facilitate the plastic deformation, e.g. drawing, of metals.
