Abstract

A process for the removal of scale from iron and steel surfaces comprises applying an aqueous pickling solution having a pH below 9 and containing a hydroxy carboxylic acid salt and an amino carboxylic acid salt, continuing pickling until the iron concentration is constant, increasing the pH to at least 9 and adding an oxidizing agent to passivate the surface. Ammonium and amine salts of citric and tartaric acids and amine and hydroxylamine salts of EDTA and NTA are referred to; an inhibitor and a wetting agent may be present. Initially the pH is maintained between 7 and 9 with ammonia solution or between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 with triethanolamine, the pH is adjusted to between 9 and 10 with NH3, ethanolamine or a Na base, an oxidant e.g. Na nitrite, persulphate, bromate or hypochlorite is added and the pH further raised to between 10 and 12. The scale may contain Cu or Cu salts.
