Abstract

A phosphating solution for ferrous, zinc or zinc alloy surfaces has a pH not less than 2.3 and contains an acid phosphate of zinc, calcium or magnesium, or a mixture of such phosphates, and 0.01-0.1 per cent by weight of simple fluoride ions, the latter being incorporated in the solution, at least in major proportion, by dissolving a soluble, ionizable fluoride the cations of which have a diffusion coefficient less than that of the lithium ion, or by adding hydrogen fluoride and neutralizing at least the major part thereof with a basic substance the cations of which have such a diffusion coefficient. Such cations may be of zinc, nickel, magnesium or barium. Lithium cations may also be present in minor proportion as also may phosphates of coating metals other than zinc, calcium or magnesium. The solution may also contain nitrate ions, the NO3/P2O5 ratio being greater than unity, e.g. 2:1 or 3:1. U.S.A. Specification 2,487,137 is referred to.
