Abstract

In a process for coating a metal or alloy surface with a phosphate, the surface is treated with a phosphate solution containing a heavy metal phosphate, i.e. a phosphate of a metal other than an alkaline or alkaline earth metal, with or without free phosphoric acid, in which the accelerator is ammonium nitrate which is reduced to an unstable nitrite. The ammonium nitrate may be replaced by a metal nitrate and an ammonium salt other than the nitrate or urea, hydrazine, guanidine, amino-guanidine sulphamic acid or a sulphamate or a mixture thereof. The solution may contain ferrous iron and the heavy metal may be iron, manganese, zinc or cadmium. The free acid should be maintained at a low value, e.g. by suspending scrap ferrous metal in the bath. The bath may be replenished by adding a concentrated chemical containing phosphoric acid and ammonium nitrate, or an equivalent mixture, in the required proportions. Specifications 386,739 and 514,443 are referred to.
