John Carbone Porfilio is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Prior to joining the 10th Circuit, Judge Porfilio was a bankruptcy and, later, a district judge for the District of Colorado.[1]

Early life and education

Porfilo graduated from University of Denver with his B.A. in 1956 and from the University of Denver College of Law with his LL.B. in 1959.[1]

Porfilio was nominated by Ronald Reagan on April 8, 1985, to a seat vacated by Judge Robert McWilliams as McWilliams assumed senior status. Hearings on Porfilio's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on May 1, 1985, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on May 2, 1985. Porfilio was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on May 3, 1985, and he received his commission on May 10, 1985. Porfilio assumed senior status on October 15, 1999.[1][3][4] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Timothy Tymkovich.

District of Colorado

Porfilio was nominated by Ronald Reagan on May 18, 1982, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Colorado vacated by Judge Fred Winner as Winner assumed senior status. Hearings on Porfilio's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 16, 1982, and his nomination was reported by Sen. Thurmond on June 23, 1982. Porfilio was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on June 24, 1982, and he received his commission the next day. Porfilio resigned from the district court on May 13, 1985, upon his elevation to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][5] Porfilio was succeeded in this position by Judge Daniel Sparr.

Colorado bankruptcy judge

Porfilo was appointed by the chief judge of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals to a fourteen-year term as a bankruptcy judge in 1975. Porfilo resigned from being a bankruptcy judge in 1982 upon his elevation to the District of Colorado.[1]
