SPLENDID MOONCAKES FROM DORSETT GRAND SUBANG

Handcrafted by resident chefs of The Emperor restaurant, both baked and snowskin mooncakes make perfect gifts this Mid-Autumn Festival.
I like the design simplicity of the Celestial Gift Set. Clad in red with the hotel name hot stamped in gold, each gift box can hold a set of four mooncakes.
TBH, these baked variants comprising White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM46), Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM46), Pure Red Bean Paste (RM38) and Six Coarse Grains Paste (RM46) exceeded my expectations.
Their nice, glossy sheen once I cut into them bears testament to good ‘yau sui’, that slick slight oiliness all notable mooncakes is judged by. According to experienced Chinese chefs, it’s a sign of well-made mooncakes with ample time to rest post-baking, resulting in their deliciousness.
Proof of that is truly in the eating. The red bean paste blows me away with its just-right sweetness. Between the pandan-flavoured and regular white lotus paste, I find the former coming up trumps thanks to its enticing aroma and appealing vanilla-like flavour.
Only the nutty variant seems a little dry and underwhelming. Overall, I’d recommend mooncakes from The Emperor as gifts this Mid-Autumn Festival. They are Halal-certified too.

OVER THE MOON WITH ORIENTAL GROUP’S MOONCAKES

Moonlight and love converge this Mid-Autumn Festival when you celebrate with delicious mooncakes from Oriental Group of Restaurants.

A vibrant red oblong gift box adorned with pretty blossoms and a pair of birds can be filled with your choice of baked or snowskin mooncakes from the restaurant group.
My favourite is the old-school Baked Mixed Nuts (RM30) mooncake. Packed with almonds, sesame seeds, walnuts, sunflower and melon seeds, the mooncake’s subtly sweet and nutty filling has a subtle whiff and taste of kaffir lime leaf too.
More unusual is the Black Sesame with White Lotus Snowskin (RM24) variant which boasts a rich nuttiness complemented by the delicate sweetness of white lotus.

Fans of classic mooncakes may prefer the buttery crumb texture of the Single Egg Yolk Shanghai Style (RM37) mooncake or the Baked Single Yolk with White Lotus Paste (RM34) mooncake.

THE COLOURS OF MID-AUTUMN AT DORSETT GRAND SUBANG

Mooncakes in various colours and flavours take the limelight for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Dorsett Grand Subang this year.

Handcrafted by Dim Sum Master Chef Chan Chee Loong, ‘The Colours of Mid-Autumn’ collection showcases a myriad of snowskin mooncakes with enticing fillings.
Berri-Licious Snowskin Mooncake

New creations to debut this year include Berri-Licious and Ying & Yang Snowskin Mooncake both priced at RM45 per mooncake. The first a pure white snowskin mooncake streaked with blue – flaunts the goodness of blueberries in its filling.

The latter, a marbled creation with striations of cream, ivory, espresso and chestnut, comes with a dual filling of milk tea and coffee paste. Unusual and most palate-pleasing.

Available at RM33 each, the Red Sapphire Snowskin Mooncake is naturally infused with red dragon fruit extract and boasts a pure red bean paste filling. The sweetness level is just nice and pleasant enough to induce repeat helpings.

Pandan fans can look forward to savouring Royal Jade (RM43 each) – a snowskin mooncake infused with pandan extract while its filling comprises fragrant pandan-infused lotus paste.

Instantly recognizable for its mesmerizing blue pea flower hue, the Dorsett Blue Signature (RM43 each) snowskin mooncake returns to join the customary celebration with its white lotus paste with single yolk filling.

Another perennial crowd-pleaser requiring 2 days’ advance order is the Signature Premium Musang King Durian (RM60 each) snowskin mooncake since it’s made using 100% MK durian pulp.

Baked variants are also available: White Lotus Paste with Double Yolks (RM48 each) requires a 3 days' advance order; Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM43 each); White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM42 each); Pure White Lotus Paste (RM36 each); Pure Red Bean Paste (RM33 each) and Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (RM43 each).

Dorsett Grand Subang’s mooncakes are HALAL certified, and made without any added preservatives. They come in a gift box of 4 pieces each.

This year’s multi-functional recycled box comes in vibrant orange, adorned with pretty motifs by iKarrtini (Malaysia’s renowned batik designer) in UV finishing. DATUK JIMMY CHOO X FOUR SEASONS HOTEL KL FOR MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

Legendary designer Datuk Jimmy Choo has stepped up to this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, by collaborating with Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur to design an exclusive mooncake gift box.

Available from 1st July 2022, the stylish round totem box in vibrant pink and muted lavender hues, and peacock origami pattern expresses the traditional Chinese custom of a family admiring the full moon while enjoying delicious mooncakes together. Tucked inside each gift box are four smaller individual boxes boasting stylish high-heel designs by Jimmy Choo.

Datuk Jimmy Choo elaborates, “In Chinese culture, the Mid-Autumn full moon represents completeness and good luck. On this joyful occasion, we are reunited with our beloved family and friends. My design for the Four Seasons Hotel mooncake gift box represents happiness, good fortune and abundance.”
According to Four Seasons Hotel's regional marketing director Nelson Hilton (left), only a thousand of the limited edition Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes will be available effective 1st July 2022. He thanked the renowned designer for agreeing to step up in collaborating with the hotel on the project.

At the launch, we were also treated to baked and snow skin mooncakes handcrafted by Chef Jimmy Wong of Yun House. The most outstanding variant that left an indelible impression is White Lotus Paste with Seaweed and Macadamia Nuts Snow Skin Mooncake. We attribute it to the seaweed’s subtle savouriness and macadamia’s inherent richness lending a nice balance to the overall sweetness.

Another winsome salty-sweet creation is the Valrhona Chocolate with Himalayan Salt and Egg Yolk Snow Skin Mooncake. Some chocolate mooncake could be too cloying and heavy on the palate but in this instance, the dark chocolate bittersweetness spiked with Himalayan salt strikes just the right chord.

Cocktail connoisseurs may be intrigued by the Trigona Rum Ki Tiki, an edible signature mooncake crafted in collaboration with the award-wining Bar Trigona. While we reckon the snow skin mooncake could do with a little more of rum (the Rum Ki Tiki cocktail recipe is concocted with aged rum, whisky, lime, trigona honey, and milk), the peanuts in the lotus paste filling seem to eclipse everything else.

Die-hard durian fans will find love at first bite once they savour the luscious Musang King Durian Snow Skin Mooncake. This perennial favourite has always been a runaway best-seller with the fans of the King of Fruits so it needs no further introduction.

Also on the menu are Baked Mooncakes with four different fillings: Pu Er Tea Paste with Tangerine Skin, White Lotus Seed Paste, Pandan Paste with Single Yolk and Lotus Seed Paste with Single Yolk.
