Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
REUBEN FAIRCHILD AND STARR FAIRCHILD, OF TRUMYBULL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO STARR FAIRCHILD.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHISELS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,990, dated February 27, 1847.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, REUBEN FAIRCHILD and STARR FAIRCHILD, ofTrumbull, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cleaning the Chips from the Mortises by the Operation of the Chisel in Mortising; and
we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,Which form a part of the same, in Which- Figures l and 2 are section Views.
The nature of our invention consists in the application of a spring upon the back of a chisel or between two chisels, permitting the chips to escape as they accumulate between the spring and chisel, thus ciearingthe chips from the nlortise, as hereinafter more fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, We will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
VVeconstructour chiselsin anyof the known forms, and apply thereto a spring c, Fig. 1 in the accompanying drawings, upon the back of the chisel c, and extending to the edge at b, where there is an opening sufficient between the edge of the chisel and spring to allow the chips to enter and escape at the circular outlet g, said spring being attached to the shank of the chisel by means of screws D D passing through Vertical slots in the spring, so as to shift the spring upon the chisel as it isworn or ground off on the edge.
Fig. 2 represents two chisels placed together, forming a double chisel with the spring placed between them, as shown by the dotted line a of the spring, the face side facing directly opposite the spring, so as to mortise in opposite directions without changing the chisel.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application of a spring, in combination with chisels for mortising, for the purpose and in the manner specified.
REUBEN FAIRCHILD. STARR FAIRCHILD.
