TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
De it known that we, JAMES HSTON, Jr., and OTIS W. STANFORD, of Shar'onville, in Hamilton county, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Carriage-Curtains; and We do hereby declare that` the following is a full and' exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
Figure 1 is a perspective viewbf our improved fastening, complete.
Figures 2, 3, andv 4 represent the several parts detached. l
The object of our invention is to furnish a cheap and ornamental fastening for curtains, which will admit of being easily attached and detached without unduly stretching the curtains, or subjecting them to the liability of being torn and broken by repeated buttonin'g, tts/hitherto has been the case.
Our fastening is composed of the t\vo plates/lA and B, the thumb-nut C, the spring-catch bolt D, spiral springs dd, disky b, and key a. In figs. 2 and 4,1:h'e two plates A and B are'represented with their reverse sides up. 'The plate A is cliamoered/ out, with an aperture between the ilanges c c to hold the shouldered head of the spring-catch D whenit enters the chamber of the plate A. The plate B is also chambered, and provided with twodixed partitions n n, against which the ends of spiral springs d CZ press and are supported. The spiral springs are placed ivlithin the recess er chamber of plate B, as represented in ig.2.v The spring-catch or bolt D is inserted through vthe hole o of plate B, which brings the key a, with its projecting ends, between the short artitions n n and he ends of the s iral s rinus d d which rest against the rtitions n n', and the disk Zrts P P P e e im into the chamberY over the springs cl d, to foiim a cover enclosing them in the chamber. After the insertion of eatch-bolt D, as above described, the thumb-nut G is placed on thesquare end e of the bolt, as seen in fig. 1. The projecting. shouldered end of bolt D is formed as the wedge, with slightly spiral or curved edges, which, when, forced into the opening Vbetween the flanges c c, will cause the bolt to partly revolve on its ax'is to admit the shoulders below the anges c c, which holds the two plates A and B together.
Our improved fastening may be constructed of various sizes and dimensions,'so that it may be employed for different purposes. 1vlhen used for vsecuring the curtains of carriages, the plate A will be let into the woodwork of the carriage in proper position, and the plate`B, with its attachments, embracing the spring-catch or bolt D, will he secured by rivets to the edge ofthe curtains in apposition tothe location of plate A, so that the pressure of the plate D, with its catch D, against the plate A, will cause the tapering spiral end of the catch to enter the aperture between the ianges c c, the bolt being turned upon its axis by the action of the twisted and tapering spire against the edges of the ltwo flanges c c; and, as soon as the shoulders of the catch pass beneath the flanges c c, the coiled springs d d, which act upon the bolt D through the medium of `key a, will retract, and thereby cause the shoulders of the catch-bolt to be'retained by the flanges c c. The parts may be fastened or locked and unfastcned by means of the thumb-nut C, which may be used to move the catch-bolt D on its axis for that purpose. Different forms of spring may be substituted forlthc spiral form to effect the same result.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f v The plates A and D, and thumb-nut C, in combination with spring-catch D, constructed and operating substantially as and for thc purpose described.
In testimony whereof, We have hereunto set our hands, this 19th day of August, 1867.
