To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn S. lVonLcn- MUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to belts for garments, more particularly trousers, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, what may be termed an invisible belt including an upper element for holding up the trousers and a lower element for holding down the shirt for the purpose of maintaining it in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a belt for the purpose setforth including an upper flexible element for holding up the trousers and formed of a material which will not stretch and further including a lower belt element formed of resilient or elastic material so it will give during the motions of the body, said lower belt element constituting means for holding down a shirt in position.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a belt for the purpose set forth which is unusually simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eificient in its use, conveniently attached to the trousers, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a rear sectional elevation of a pair of trousers, broken away, showing the adaptation therewith of a belt in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of a pair of trousers, broken away, showing the adaptation therewith of a belt in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a belt disconnected.

Referring to the drawings in detail 8 denotes an upper belt element which is formed of flexible material of a character that will not stretch. One end of the element 8 is provided with a buckle 11. Said element 8, throughout its length, is provided with button-holes 13, which receive buttons 14, carried on the upper end of hangers 10, whereby these latter can be detachably connected with the element 8.

The reference character 9 denotes a lower belt element to which the lower ends of said hangers 10 are secured. The belt element 9 is constructed of resilient material andhas one end thereof provided with a buckle 12. The belt element 9, from its center, toward its end, inclines downwardly with respect to the belt element 8.

The belt element 9 is employed for holding the outer shirt down and also in the position to which it has been set.

The buckles 11 and 12 are employed for connecting the ends of the belt elements together in position around the body of the wearer.

As the lower belt element inclines downward from the center toward each end the ends of said belt element 6, when connected together, will be positioned below the stomach so as not to cause any inconvenience when wearing the belt.

The belt element 8 can be connected in any suitable manner with the trousers. For example, it can extend through straps secured to the inner face of the trousers or it can be fastened to the trousers in any manner.

What I claim is 1. A belt for holding up trousers comprising an upper flexible belt element formed of a single length of straight material capable of surrounding the waist of the wearer, a.

lower belt element formed of a single length of elastic material capable of being positioned around the body of the wearer below the stomach, spaced flexible hangers permanently secured at their lower ends to said elastic element and removably connected at their upper ends with said flexible element, independent means for securing the ends of each belt element together, and said lower element from its center toward each end in clining downwardly with respect to said upper belt element to facilitate the posltioning of the lower belt element below the stomach.

2. A belt for holding up trousers comprising an upper flexible belt element formed of a single length of straight material capa-' ble of surrounding the waist of the wearer, a lower belt element formed of a single length of elastic material capable of being positioned around the body of the wearer below the stomach, spaced flexible hangers permanently secured at their lower ends to said elastic element and removably connected at their upper ends with said flexible element, independent means for securing the ends of each belt element together, and said lower element from its center toward each end inclining downwardly with respect to said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
