Abstract

Graft polymers are made by taking a crystalline homopolymer or copolymer in the solid state and free from residual polymerization catalyst derived from at least one monomer having the general formula <FORM:0998979/C3/1> in which V and W individually consist of hydrogen, chlorine, a methyl radical or a nitrile radical, and heating it at a temperature between its melting point and 20 DEG C. below its melting point in the presence of a vapour of one or more polymerizable monomers having the general formula <FORM:0998979/C3/2> in which X and Y individually consist of hydrogen, methyl, a nitrile radical, a carboxylic acid radical or a carboxylic acid alkyl ester radical, or a mixture of one of said monomers with maleic anhydride. The examples describe grafting: (1) ethyl acrylate on to polyvinyl chloride, (2) acrylic acid on to a vinyl/vinylidene chloride copolymer, (3) methyl methacrylate on to a blend of polyvinyl chloride and a chlorinated polyolefin, (4) methacrylic acid on to polyethylene, (5) acrylic acid on to polyethylene, (6) acrylonitrile on to polyethylene, (7) a mixture of acrylonitrile and maleic anhydride on to polyethylene, (8) acrylic acid on to a polypropylene film, and (9) acrylic acid on to polyacrylonitrile fibre, to produce a dyeable product.
