Abstract

Graft polymers are made by heating chlorinated polyethylene which has sites thereon activated for free-radical polymerization with at least 5% by weight of a vinylidene monomer in a liquid reaction medium. The activation of the chlorinated polyethylene may be effected by chlorinating polyethylene in the presence of oxygen or hydrogen peroxide, or by ozonizing chlorinated polyethylene. Monomers specified are styrene, methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl and glycidylmethacrylates, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, n-octyl acrylate and divinylbenzene. Polymerization may be carried out in aqueous suspension or in solution, e.g. in toluene. When polymerizing in aqueous suspension it is preferred to have present a solvent, e.g. methanol, which is a non-solvent for the chlorinated polyethylene, thereby minimizing the formation of vinylidene monomer homopolymer.
