Abstract

Cross-linked elastomers are produced by heating a mixture of (1) a linear copolymer of ethylene and 10 to 60% of a monomer having an aliphatic carbon atom with only one hydrogen bonded thereto, (2) a free-radical forming compound, and (3) 0,5 to 20% by weight of the copolymer of a monomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups. The copolymerizable monomers of (1) specified are propylene; vinyl acetate, propionate, chloracetate, formate and benzoate; vinyl alcohol, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, esters and semi-esters of fumaric and maleic acids, styrene, vinyl chloride and maleic acid anhydride. The preferred copolymers are those produced with vinyl esters by free-radical polymerization in a butanol medium. The freeradical forming p compounds disclosed are the persulphates, perborates, azodiisobutyronitrile, azodicarboxylic acid esters; benzoyl, dichlorobenzoyl, cyclohexanone, polymeric phthalyl, di-t-butyl and dicumyl peroxides; t-butyl hydroperoxide, peroxy dicarbonates, t-butyl perbenzoate, adipic acid-bis-t-butyl perester and polyacrylic acid-t-butyl perester. The monomer (3) may be divinyl or trivinyl benzene, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diallyl phthalate, silicic acid tetra-allyl ester, triallyl phosphate, diallyl or triallyl ether of glycerine, tetraallyl or hexallyl ether of methylol melamine, a polyurethane, an unsaturated polester, triacryl triazine, triallyl cyanurate, triallyl phosphate or vinyl cyclohexene. Pigments and fillers, e.g. carbon black and silica, may be present. The products find application as containers, pipes, tubes and in coatings on cables, tyres and textiles.
