A three-cylinder type rotary printing machine for printing in letterpress, letterpress offset or planographic offset comprises an impression cylinder 6 and cores 7, 8, the latter having associated inking and dampening mechanisms 11, 12. Each of the cores is adapted to mount a shell carrying an appropriate surface. In letterpress printing the core 7, Fig. 4, carries a shell 16 mounting a relief printing plate, the core 8 mounts a shell 14 faced with a rubber blanket which serves to transfer ink from the mechanism 11 to the plate on the shell 16, whilst the cylinder 6 has a partially resilient covering of paper of known type. For letterpress offset, core 8, Fig. 3, mounts the shell 16 carrying the relief plate, core 7 carries the rubber faced shell 14 and the cylinder 6 has a rigid face, preferably of sheet steel. During both these operations the dampening mechanism 12 is withdrawn from the shell carrying core 8. For printing in planographic offset an offset printing plate is carried by a shell 15, Fig. 2, on the core 8, the core 7 mounts the rubberfreed shell 14 whilst the impression cylinder is similar to that described above in relation to the letterpress offset process.
