Abstract
905,517. Piston rings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 7722/58. Class 122 (1). A piston ring comprises a split ring 6 and a restriction 8 that controls the expansion or contraction of the split ring and is made of the same material as the cylinder or of material having a similar coefficient of thermal expansion as the cylinder material so that the degree of interference between the ring 6 and the cylinder wall is substantially constant at all temperatures. The split ring 6 is of carbon and the ring 8 has a small clearance with the cylinder bore. In a modification, the split ring 6 is of T-section and a restriction ring is located on each side of its radial flange. In another modification, the restriction ring is housed in an annular groove in one end wall of the split ring. In a further modification, Fig. 8, a carbon segmental ring 11 is located in a peripheral groove in the restriction ring 13.
