Abstract
819,435. Pipe couplings. K.A.C. Ltd. Jan. 20 1958 [Oct. 18, 1956] No.31699/56 Class 99(1). A tubular body 1 has an internal, inwardlyconverging, frusto-conical bore 9 for receiving coaxially a pipe 6 and forms about the latter an inwardly-convergent annular space in which is located a sealing ring 10 of channel form in radial section and defining therewithin an inwardly-convergent, annular recess 13, an inwardly-convergent split ring 14 being located in the recess. A union member 3 surrounds the pipe and is so associated with the body as to be capable of being drawn towards the body to urge the split ring into the recess 13 to cause the sealing ring to be forced into the annular space around the pipe and to be engaged tightly against both the pipe and the surface of the bore 9. As shown, the body has and internal shoulder 8 against which the ends of the pipes 6 abut the internal diameter of the shoulder preferably being the same as that of the pipes. The sealing rings are of soft and ductile material such as aluminium and the steel rings 14 are split at an angle to a radial plane thereof. The nuts 3 when screwed on to the body cause the sealing tings 10 annularly to deform the pipes. The device may be used to blank off the end of a pipe.
