Abstract
671,480. Pipe and rod couplings. CREELMAN, R. May 16, 1950 [May 27, 1949], No. 14217/49. Class 99 (i) A member 10 is provided with an annular recess 17a housing a split metallic ring 18 partly protruding from the recess and is screwed onto an element 11, the ring engaging in an annular groove 20, of an element 12, formed between the shoulder 22 at the wider end of a tapered spigot 23 or a cylindrical spigot, and a cylindrical portion 21. The diameters of the shoulder and the portion 21 are greater than the internal diameter of the ring in the unstressed condition so that, initially, the member is pressed axially over the element 12. The portion 21 may have a tapered part 25, oppositely inclined to the face 17 of the recess, that expands the ring before the ring is finally contracted into the groove by the face 17 as the member is screwed further on to the element 11. The ring may be of non-circular cross-section, e.g. triangular.
