Abstract

1456143 Pipe couplings PHILMAC PTY Ltd 30 April 1974 [2 May 1973 6 Sept 1973] 18791/74 Heading F2G A multigrade pipe coupling, suitable for various grades of pipe of similar internal diameter but of different wall thickness, comprises a body 11, a compression nut 14, a compression ring 13 and a sleeve 12. The body is provided with a centre bore and a male thread concentric with this bore and the nut has a female thread extending inwardly from one end and threadedly engaging the body, the other end containing a central aperture able to accommodate the largest diameter of pipe to be coupled. The nut also has a tapered inner surface converging from the thread towards the central aperture which bears against the similarly tapered outer surface of the compression ring, the inner surface of which in turn bears against the outer surface of the pipe to be clamped. The sleeve has a tail, which is inserted into the pipe, and an annular recess around the tail, disposed radially inwardly of the compression ring, into which the end portion of the pipe is forced, upon tightening of the nut, through the consequential radial compression of the ring. Sealing between the body and the sleeve is achieved upon the mating of the frusto-conical annular surfaces 19, 20 achieved on tightening of the nut through the consequential axial pressure of the planar surface 24 of the compression ring on the flange 22 of the body.
