A winding and setting mechanism of the rocking-bar type is characterized in that the square head of the winding stem is so shaped that during the return motion of the winding stem from the setting position to the winding position the intermediate setting wheel pivoting on the rocking bar cannot actuate the hands of said watch or clock movement nor prevent the return movement of the rocking bar. In the first example, Fig. 1, the winding stem 9 has a square head 10 of helicoidal form so that when the stem is depressed, from the setting position to the winding position the ,crown pinion 8 is rotated slightly to impart through the transmission wheel 7 a clockwise movement to the intermediate setting wheel 3 thus cancelling out the simultaneous counterclockwise movement of the wheel caused by its rolling on this wheel 7 as the rocking bar 1 moves back. No movement is therefore imparted to the minute wheel 6 as the setting bar 1 rocks clockwise. In a second example, Fig. 2, the square head 16 of the winding stem 9 is the shape of a truncated pyramid so that when the stem is depressed the pinion 8 has a sufficient play to allow the transmission wheel to yield and prevent rotation of the intermediate setting wheel.
