Abstract

628,366. Generating combustion products under pressure. MORDELL, D. L. Sept. 1, 1947, No. 24151. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In gas turbine plant having re-heat combustion chambers which are to be brought into use during the operation of the plant, fuel and high-pressure air are ignited in a shielded chamber from which a torch flame then issues into the re-heat combustion chamber to ignite the main fuel supply. The shielded chamber may contain a spark or glow plug, or spontaneous ignition may be secured by a selected fuel or by a sufficiently hot air supply. The latter may be taken from the delivery of the main combustion chamber. A re-heat chamber 17, Fig. 3, between turbine stages has a main fuel supply 29 and a torch flame burner 22. Fuel is injected at 27 and highpressure air passes through the perforations in the end of the burner. Gases passing to a propulsion jet are re-heated by fuel from an injector 48, Fig. 5, in a central air duct 49. A torch flame is provided from a chamber 51. The valves controlling the supply of air and fuel to the torch flames may be operated by solenoids arranged in parallel circuit with the spark or glow plug. Specification 618,760, [Group XXVI], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
