Abstract

718,213. Generating combustion products under pressure. THERMAL RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. June 9, 1952, No. 14521/52. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XI] A burner in which controlled combustion is completed before the energy generated therein is utilized, comprises a single chamber 10 formed with a fuel-air mixing section 14 and a combustion section 15, means, e.g. an annular shoulder 19 at the junction of sections 14, 15, for holding the flame in the section 15, and means e.g. holes 22 in the shoulder 19, an annular passage 21, and an annular slot or holes 23, through which hot gases are withdrawn from the region of the flame holder and passed to the mixing section 14. - The latter is formed as a Venturi tube, supplied with air through an inlet 11 and with oil through a nozzle 12. The oil spray is vaporized by the hot gases entering the tube 14 through the slot or holes 23. Air swirling vanes 17 may be provided on the fuel supply tube 13 adjacent the nozzle 12. An ignition spark plug 20 is disposed adjacent the shoulder 19. Gas may be added as a supplemental fuel to the gases within the space 21 or to the air supplied through the inlet 11. In an alternative embodiment the mixture is ignited within the mixing tube, by a spark plug, and the ignited mixture impinges on a baffle within the mixing tube to produce turbulence. In a further construction a flame stabilizer in the form of a pair of coaxial tubes is provided within the combustion section, one of the tubes being slightly smaller in diameter than the downstream end of the mixing tube and slightly spaced therefrom, and the other tube having its upstream end telescoped within the downstream end of the first tube.
