Abstract
Phosphating surfaces of iron, steel or zinc in the presence of aluminium ; or phosphating successively surfaces formed of or containing aluminium and other surfaces of iron, steel or zinc; with or without accelerators, the phosphatization solution containing sufficient sodium metasilicate to maintain the concentration of aluminium ions suitably low for satisfactory phosphating. 0.2-20.0 gms. per litre, and preferably 1.0-15.0 gms. per litre, of sodium metasilicate, Na2SiO3. 9H2O, are added per litre of solution for each square metre of aluminium surface to be treated. The sodium metasilicate may be added to the phosphate solution in the form of a concentrated aqueous solution or in solid form. The usual accelerators such as nitrate, chlorate or nitrite may be present either singly or as a mixture. Bath solutions of zinc and manganese phosphate are mentioned, maintained at temperatures varying from 60-90 DEG C.
