Abstract
544,153. Coating metals; bearings. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., BETTERIDGE, W., and GADD, E. R. April 30, 1940, No 7779. [Classes 82 (i) and 82(ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXVI] A bearing comprises a silver-copper alloy bonded to a steel backing or shell with lead diffused into the surface of the alloy which contains 2-10 per cent. of copper, preferably 7.5 per cent. The lead is diffused into the silver-copper alloy bearing by plating with lead and heating to a temperature above the melting point of lead, or by dipping into semi-molten lead silver alloy or molten lead or into a molten lead compound, such as lead bromide. Alternatively a layer of pure silver may be bonded to a steel shell, plated with copper and heated to cause the copper to diffuse into, and alloy with, the silver and then treating it as described above to diffuse in the lead.
