Abstract

528,558. Coating metals ; alloys ; fluxes. ABELL, C. D. May 19, 1939, Nos. 14997 and 24703. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] Metals such as iron, steel, galvanized iron and steel, copper and copper alloys are provided with a coating of an alloy of lead and tin, with or without cadmium, zinc, and aluminium, by cleaning the surface of the metal for the removal of grease &c. immersing it in a bath of flux, and then treating it with the alloy at 600-700‹F. by dipping or spraying. The lead-tin alloy may be lead containing up to 10 per cent. of tin, with or without up to 0.5 per cent. of aluminium ; or up to 5 per cent. each of tin and cadmium; or up to 5 per cent. of tin and up to 0.5 per cent. each of aluminium and zinc ; or up to 5 per cent. each of tin and cadmium and up to 0.5 per cent. of zinc or aluminium. The flux is preferably a neutral solution of zinc ammonium chloride, and is used at 140-234‹F. After coating with the alloy, the articles may in some cases be treated again with the flux and then with the alloy.
