Abstract

<PICT:0348690/III/1> Carbonaceous materials are destructively hydrogenated at 250 DEG C. or higher and under a pressure of at least 20 atmospheres in the presence of catalysts obtained by treating oxides of metals of group 2 and 6 with volatile sulphur, selenium, or tellurium compounds, such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon bisulphide, mercaptans, thiophene, alkyl sulphur compounds, thioethers, hydrogen selenide, or hydrogen telluride, at elevated temperatures, such as 400-500 DEG C., in the presence of hydrogen and in the absence of hydrocarbons which are not gaseous under normal conditions. Examples of suitable oxide mixtures are given. The activity of the catalysts may be maintained by adding a definite concentration of a volatile compound of the negative element of the catalyst to the hydrogenating gas. Apparatus for a single stage, continuous process consists of a reactor 8 to which a coal-oil mixture is supplied from a mixer 2 through a preheater 6; heat is supplied by electric resistances 10, and the catalyst is carried on rotating stirrers 11. Preheated hydrogen enters through a nozzle 15. Volatile products leaving at 16 are separated in the usual manner, the hydrogen being re-cycled. In a two-stage process, heavy oil withdrawn from the base of the reactor is further treated in a second vessel. Examples of the destructive hydrogenation of various oils are given. The catalysts may also be used for cracking, and for the refining of lubricating oils, illuminating oils, and benzines.
