Abstract
Colloidal rhenium or compounds of rhenium in colloidal form on suitable carriers are used in the treatment of carbonaceous materials at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen, for effecting destructive hydrogenation, for refining or desulphurizing the carbonaceous materials &c., or for converting phenols, cresols, &c. into hydrocarbons substantially without splitting. The starting materials may be coal, lignite, cellulose, petroleum and its products, asphalt, tars, &c. Carriers for the catalyst are those named in Specification 353,506, or active carbon, finely divided coal, &c. In the example cresol was heated to 450 DEG C. from room temperature during 40 minutes with hydrogen at about 100 atmos. initial pressure in presence of colloidal rhenium sulphide on active carbon heating was stopped, and the pressure was released while the temperature was between 320 DEG and 250 DEG C. The product contained 41,4 per cent gasoline boiling mainly below 110 DEG C. To prepare the catalyst, a solution of potassium per-rhenate, KReO4, acidified with sulphuric acid, was treated at 80 DEG C. with sulphuretted hydrogen until dark brown, and active carbon was added to absorb the colloidal sulphide.ALSO:Colloidal rhenium or compounds of rhenium in colloidal form on suitable carriers are used in the treatment of carbonaceous materials at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen for desulphurizing substances such as petroleum, or for converting phenols, cresols, &c. into hydrocarbons substantially without splitting. Carriers for the catalyst are those named in Specification 353,506, or active carbon, finely divided coal, &c. In the example, cresol was heated to 450 DEG C. from room temperature during 40 minutes with hydrogen at about 100 atmospheres initial pressure in presence of colloidal rhenium sulphide on active carbon, heating was stopped, and the pressure was released while the temperature was between 320-250 DEG C. To prepare the catalyst, a solution of potassium per-rhenate, KReO4, acidified with sulphuric acid, was treated at 80 DEG C. with sulphuretted hydrogen until dark brown, and active carbon was added to absorb the colloidal sulphide.ALSO:Colloidal rhenium or compounds of rhenium in colloidal form on suitable carriers are used in the treatment of carbonaceous materials, including asphalt, at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen for effecting destructive hydrogenation, refining, or desulphurizing. Carriers for the catalyst are those named in Specification 353,506, or active carbon, finely divided coal, &c.
