Abstract

Esters of sulphonated hydroxy or sulphonated unsaturated fatty acids are obtained by treating the latter after neutralization with an ester of an aliphatic or aromatic-aliphatic alcohol with an inorganic acid or an arylsulphonic acid. In examples: (1) oleic acid is sulphonated, made alkaline with sodium carbonate and then treated with diethylsulphate; (2) the sulphuric ester of ricinoleic acid is made alkaline with borax and treated with p-toluenesulphonic methyl ester; (3) sulphonated oleic acid is made alkaline with sodium carbonate and then treated with benzylchloride. According to the Provisional Specification monohydric alcohols may be used for the esterification and fats and oils in place of the free fatty acids.
