Abstract
Vegetable oils including cotton seed, soya bean, rape seed, cocoanut, &c., are treated, either before or after purification, with an agent namely water, alcohol or an electroyte, which is adapted to precipitate the phosphatides. According to an example, cotton seed oil is treated with one of the specified reagents, followed by settling, filtering and centrifuging and by purification. The electrolytes comprise dilute aqueous solutions of acids such as boric, sulphuric, and acetic, alkaline solutions such as tri-sodium phosphate and triethanolamine, and salts such as sodium sulphate and borate in dilute solution. The precipitate may be purified by washing with water, acetone, or hot alcohol and dissolving in ether. The phosphatides may be dried and employed for adding to chocolate-coating materials, margarine, and other fats.
