Abstract
A jointing sleeve (14) is caused to collapse by heating over one (10) of the fibres to be connected. The second fibre (11) to be connected is subsequently inserted into the open end of the sleeve and mounted there by means of a bonding agent (19) whose index of refraction is matched to that of the fibre. This mode of procedure enables the space between the fibre ends to be filled up with a medium whose index of refraction is matched to that of the fibres, and this dispenses with flat grinding of the fibre ends. <IMAGE>
