Abstract
A separable optical interconnection 10 includes two light-transmissive members 45, 55, each of which has a recess 51, 59 in one end receiving a spherical lens 53, 60 and a tapered cavity 48, 56 in its opposite end which receives an optical fibre 11, 12. The optical fibre 11, 12, is biased into the cavity 48, 56 so that its end engages the tapered cavity surface and space remaining between the end of the fibre 11, 12 and the end of the cavity 48, 56 is filled with a quantity of optical fluid 86. Each of the light-transmissive members 45, 55 includes a tapering exterior surface 46, 62 tapering towards its inner end and complementarily engaging a tapered internal surface 41, 43 in a tubular member 23, 29 which receives it and positions the members so that their lenses are correctly spaced and in alignment. Means 15 are provided for removably interconnecting the tubular members 23, 29, to complete the interconnection. <IMAGE>
