Abstract

1381709 Sliding-caliper disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 3 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 6408/71 Heading F2E A sliding caliper disc brake comprises a rotaable disc, a torque member 10 arranged to be fixed to a stationary part of a vehicle, and a caliper member 18 slidable relative to the torque plate member 10 for moving friction pads disposed on opposite sides of the disc into braking engagement therewith. At least one pin assembly is provided for providing the sliding of the caliper of member 18. The pin assembly is formed of at least two parts, a first component of the assembly having a sliding surface slidable in a complementary opening in one of the members and a second component of the assembly releasably clamping the first component against the other of the members, the second component being fastened either to the first component or to the other member and passing with a clearance fit through an oversized opening in either the other member or the first component respectively. In the construction shown the second component comprises a pin 42 having a threaded region 48 and the first component a bush 50 having a complementary screw thread 48. Two assemblies 48, 50 are provided. In a further embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) a headed pin passes through a bush which forms the slide for the caliper member and is screwed into a threaded bore in the torque plate member. Alternatively pin slides within a bore of the torque plate and is fastened to the caliper member by means of a clamping screw passing through the caliper member and engaging in a threaded bore in the pin (Figs. 7 to 10, not shown). The pin may be provided with a friction type wear adjuster (Figs. 7, and 8, not shown) on a sealing ring (Fig. 9, not shown). A radial port may connect the inner end of the threaded bore with the outer surface of the pin to facilitate the entry of the clamping screw. The caliper may have two limbs, one on each side of the torque plate. A bush slides in the torque plate and clamping screws, one passing through each limb are screwed into each end of of the bush (Fig. 11, not shown). In a further embodiment (Figs. 12, 13, 14, not shown) a pin is attached to the caliper by a clamping screw, and the pin is provided with a resilient bush providing the sliding surface for the torque plate. In this embodiment the brake may be actuated mechanically as well as by hydraulic means and a wear adjustment device is also provided. The pin extends across the plane of the disc. In a modification (Figs. 15 to 17, not shown) the pin extends in a blind bore which only extends on one side of the disc. The caliper is of unitary construction.
