Abstract

1379969 Load spreader BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 7 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 38282/72 Heading B8H A load spreader for handling ISO containers or "Freightliner" containers of different lengths comprises a box beam 1 suspended from a crane &c. and having beams 4 telescopically mounted within the ends and movable by a sprocket and chain 7. A first pair of container engaging assemblies are mounted on respective crossbeams 5 mounted on respective beam 4 and have twist locks to engage upper corner castings of a container. A pair of yokes mounted on the beam 1 each support a pair of grapple arms 8 with feet 11 to engage in pockets at the lower edge of a container. The arms are pivotable about an axis parallel to longitudinal axis of beam 1 and also about axis transverse thereof to move into a horizontal storage position parallel to the beam. The arms are further longitudinally movable along the beam 1 by hydraulic motor to accommodate different sized containers. A third pair of container engaging assemblies, for lifting 10<SP>1</SP> containers, are mounted on the beam 1 and are telescopically movable between raised inoperative position and a lowered operative position. The assemblies have twist locks 19 to engage top castings of the container.
