Abstract
1354441 Flaring tubes; tube expanders ZAKO ROHRVERBINDUNGEN GmbH & CO KG 27 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 30121/72 Headings B3Q and B3J [Also in Division F2] A double flange is formed at the end of a metal tube lined with plastics by forcing a mandrel, which may be a pipe connection member, into the free end of the tube to expand it, the mandrel &c. having a collar with a face shaped to form the double flange and a tapering circular surface at least partly toughened to hold back the plastics lining as the mandrel enters the tube, so that the lining is pushed back from the tube end. In one form, a tube 12, Fig. 3, having a plastics lining 11, is expanded by a tapered mandrel 22 having a toughened annular area 23 and a peripheral rib 24 engaged by the plastics lining when the tube is initially placed upon the mandrel, Fig. 1 (not shown). A split holder ring 13 having a toughened surface 14 grips the tube 12 and has a frusto-conical surface 15 engaging a corresponding surface in a ring 17 tightened to the position shown by turning a threaded spindle 18. At first, the rib 24 holds the plastics lining 11 while the tube end 40 is slidden to abut the end face of an annular groove 25 in the mandrel, Fig. 2 (not shown). On further rotation of the spindle 18, the plastics lining 11 slides over the rib 24, as shown, and the annular groove 25 deforms the tube end 40 to form the double flange 27 shown. The mandrel 22 &c. is withdrawn, and the double flanged tube end 40, Fig. 5, may be inserted over the tapered and roughened end of a pipe connector 29, where it is held by tightening a nut 28. Alternatively, a seal ring (43), Figs. 10-12 (not shown), may surround the hose of the end of the pipe connector 29, the outer end edge (44) of which is bevelled. To form a further modification, the double flange 27, Fig. 8, at the end of the tube 12, is forced over an 0-ring 39 lodged against a peripheral lip 37 around a pipe connector 38 to seat within a groove 41, into which it is crimped. In yet another form, the double flanged end of the tube 12, lined with plastics 11, is formed as the tube is forced on to a tapered mandrel 49, constituting a part of a pipe connector, and having grooves 51 engaged by the lining. A nut 52 is tightened to secure the mandrel 49 against a seal ring 48 in a pipe connector 45.
