Abstract

1,225,254. Evaporators; desalination of water. Y. HENDERYCKX. 15 March, 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12776/68. Heading B1B Distilled water is obtained from salt water by passing it through heater 7 into a chamber 2 where it flows along one side of a diaphragm 4, which is permeable only to water-vapour, whereby water-vapour diffuses through the diaphragm and the air-gap 6, and then condenses on one side of wall 5 which is cooled on the other side by the flow of salt water introduced into chamber 3 through inlet I. Before passing from chamber 3 to chamber 2, the salt water flows through heater 7. Distilled water is removed from the system through outlet V; and brine is pumped out through outlet IV. The solution preferably flows through the apparatus in the form of a thin layer. The air-gap may be maintained at any chosen pressure. Diaphragm 4 may be made of cellulose acetate. Wall 5 may be a thin sheet of polypropylene. A plurality of distillation cells may be connected as shown in Fig. 2. The apparatus has six diaphragms 35, 36, 39, 40, 43, 44. The solution to be treated flows in parallel through compartments 21, 25, 29, 33, then passes through heater 47, and then flows in parallel through evaporation compartments 23, 27, 31. Distilled water is withdrawn by pump 48.
