Abstract
1,174,764. Continuous casting. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 20 Dec., 1966 [21 Dec., 1965], No. 54101/65. Heading B3F. In a method of continuous casting a bi-metal member, the separate molten constituents are fed into respective compartments in a mould divided by a partition, the downstream edge of which is upstream of the solidus for each component, and which may be cooled and is adjustable longitudinally and transversely of the mould axis, the two constituents combining below the lower edge of the partition to form a united bi-metal member which is continuously withdrawn from the mould. The mould may be of rectangular cross-section or of other section depending on the shape of the section to be cast. The particular embodiment describes apparatus for continuously casting a bimetal member in which separate metal constituents A and B are supplied to separate compartments 14 and 13 respectively of a tundish 12. The separate metals A and B are subsequently fed from either side of an adjustable partition 21 through channel 24 and 25 respectively into a mould defined by graphite inserts 19. The metals combine in the region beyond the edge 23 of the partition 21 the bi-metal strip being retained between continuous moving flexible glass fibre belts 36 between which it solidifies. Control of the solidification is effected by graphite chill members 31, 32 immediately adjacent the mould which are spring urged towards the casting issuing from the mould and which are water cooled from ducts 37.
