Abstract
1,225,762. Continuous composite casting; making composite sheet metal. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 12066/67. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division C7] A laminate is made by pouring a molten superplastic metal alloy into a mould and introducing a lamina of material that will not melt or fuse with said alloy, so that the lamina is cast into the alloy without bonding thereto. The lamina may be of copper having an oxidized surface, brass or steel (coated with temperature-resistant resin), glass fibre, graphite fibre, or temperature - resistant resin filled with powdered refractory material As shown, a surface-oxidized copper strip 41 is fed through rolls 17 into a cavity formed between the nip of rolls 22, 29. The rolls are provided with helical coolant passages and the nip is adjustable by a hand wheel 25. A molten Zn alloy (22% Al, 0À15% Cu) is cast through nozzles 45 from a tundish 11 on to both sides of the strip 41. The alloy solidifies and the laminate 42 produced is withdrawn around a bending roll 39. Alternatively, the lamina may be retained in a conventional mould and alloy may be poured therein to form a laminated ingot. The laminate may be reduced in thickness between sizing rolls or passed to a cut-up line. The laminate may be fluid-blown between dies and at a temperature in the superplastic range, e.g. 260‹ C., for effecting separation of the layers in certain regions to form refrigerator evaporators.
