1,157,977. Continuous casting. METALLURGICHESKY ZAVOD IMENI V.I. LENINA. 4 Oct., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965; 4 July, 1966], No. 44338/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H2] Aluminium, steel or alloys are cast continuously, without using a mould, by providing an alternating electromagnetic field about a stream of the molten metal so that forces set up in the metal determine its cross-sectional shape while cooling water is supplied to its surface to solidify it. Molten metal first passes from a trough 2 to a box 3 and from an outlet 4 on to a starter bar 9 inserted into an annular electromagnetic inductor 1. Water from a movable header 10 flows through an annular nozzle 11 on to the side of the molten metal B while it is retained on the bar 9 by the forces induced in it by the inductor 1. As the metal solidifies, the bar 9 is lowered with the solidified metal A which is supported by adjustable rollers 13. A cup 5 is placed on the molten metal B to distribute the further metal arriving.
