Abstract

1,159,851. Printing-machines. AMERICAN CAN CO. 20 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 47079/66. Heading B6C. In a web-fed rotary press in which at least two plate cylinders and associated inking apparatus coact with a common impression cylinder 2, each inking roller train 9, 10, and 65, 66 incorporates a pitted hard-surfaced metering roller 11 which is adjustably mounted to idly rotate on the forme roller 10 or 66 to control the amount of ink transmitted from the ductor roller 9 or 65 to the plate cylinder 7 or 67. As is shown in Fig. 2, adjustment of the axis of the roller 11 relative to the forme roller axis is effected by manual operation of hand wheels 28, 63 and/or 37. A scraper 56 operable by lever knobs 52 at each end regulates the ink film thickness on the roller 11. As the roller 11 associated with the inking train 65 and 66 is inverted relative to that associated with the train 9, 10, an ink-collecting tray 68 is placed therebeneath. In a second embodiment, movable weights arranged on a weight rack are used to resiliently hold the roller 11 against the forme roller. The roller 11 has an ink collecting groove at each end.
